RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Why do I keep having this fantasy?

This is from my dream log.

I don't know, but ever since I was 4 or 5 years old, I've always had this fantasy of living by myself in this log cabin in the forests of Idaho, or perhaps Oregon or southeastern Washington. I don't know why. Something about forests has always attracted me.

Perhaps the fact that's it undisturbed (for the most part)? I like forests. I like nature. So much more beautiful than what we've done with the world.

Only downside of living in a forest would be fuel costs and no internet. Oh, how my life would be dull.

RE: Why do I keep having this fantasy?

Seclusion in a peaceful, unexplored part of nature can have an appeal.

As for why you're having the fantasy... do you remember the first time you had it? Where there any particular surrounding circumstances?

It might also just be an expression of a natural introvert preference.

What would you do with your days, living in that kind of environment?

RE: Why do I keep having this fantasy?

I know what Id do in a isolated area. Build a lab, dig myself a nice test field(obviously legally owning the property), and just build the stuff I have in mind.

Perhaps its just that with a globalizing world, and all this urbanization, some just get sick of it.

I first had the fantasy when I first began compulsory schooling. Dead serious. I remember that on the first day of school ever that I said I couldn't wait to get out of school, and for whatever reason the cabin in Idaho was a symbol for freedom. They say that as you get older, you "mature" (or, in my view, conform), but the log cabin fantasy stays strong to this day.

I'm not sure what I'd do in my cabin. Probably eat a lot of canned food, watch SportsCenter, browse the internet, and hiking. Doesn't sound like a lot, but that kind of lifestyle somehow appeals to me.... just living alone in the woods.

I believe it is called a "life dream". Whatever you do, don't lose it.

RE: Why do I keep having this fantasy?

I have a fantasy of travelling the world for a few months, just going to loads of different countries for a few days, and eating all the foods, seeing all the culture etc. I can understand why you'd dream of the forest cabin, it'd be lovely to live out of civilisation.

Why do I keep having this fantasy?

Yeah, the forests have a special appeal to introverts because they're undisturbed by man, and still in their beauty.

Interesting contrast to Hansgrohe's fantasy of being in one secluded location. Smile

You might want to check out Round-the-world airfares, where you pay one price to travel all the way around the world using a bunch of one-way segments. Here's one article about it by Chris Guillebeau How to Buy a Round-the-World Plane Ticket (That Kicks Ass) -- the links partway down in the article have tools that are fun to map out these grand trips. Why do I keep having this fantasy?

To be fair, I've always wanted to go to all kinds of places myself. More or less specific locations. Such locations include:

Maine, Washington (State), Los Angeles, Sydney and its beaches, Mexico City, Bilbao, Dumfries, Korea, Rio de Janeiro, etc. I've always been attracted to the Northeastern US states (especially New England) for whatever reason.

When I finish school for good, I hope to travel Europe for a while on my own. Have a few years to wait though unfortunately
