RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Crap, a brownout

My whole town is having a brownout right now and my mom turned all the lights out to conservere power sp we are pretty much all dark (and it's pretty much night.)
I'm typing this on my iPad, while it's dark, listening to Green Day
My two little brothers are on their iPhones
And my little sister is freaking out (because she's 4)
And my parents are cooking dinner

Hopefully the power will come back on soon

Is it actually called a brownout? In canada we call it a blackout

Brownout is when some (but not all) lights are turned out, to conserve energy. Might be a US exclusive term though.

RE: Crap, a brownout

Brownout means that there is still electric available, but its either intermitten or not at a capacity high enough to support he entire grid.

Blackout means no power.

So in a brownout, your lights may flicker/dim but in a blackout they'd be off completely.

Crap, a brownout

Question: Is this a mandatory brownout where they actually force you to consume lower power, or is it optional?

RE: Crap, a brownout

By optional you mean unintentional.

Brownouts generally mean something is happening with the electric provider or infrastructure that leaves them unable to provide stable electricity for the entire grid. If you decide to cut down on electric usage yourself or by suggestion of the electric provider, then that's not a brownout but just you completely voluntarily acting on your own behalf.

Rarely can a utility actually force you to reduce consumption, except by diverting electric away from you. And in those cases, they need to explain why they've diverted a good deal of electric off your grid.

I don't think it's mandatory, it's the first brownout that we have, plus my power company would be sued if they did a force brownout. That night, my family went into town to get dinner and the road you take into town takes you right past the power station for my subdivision (A subdivision is pretty much a neighborhood complex) and I saw electricians working there. Apparently the brownout only affected my sub-division

Fun Fact: Texas (my home state) is the only state that has it's own power grid. There are 3 grids, 1 for the east US, 1 for the west US, and one for Texas

Another good reason for me to move to Texas.

RE: Crap, a brownout

Some of East grid is even connected to Canada from what I recall of the '03 blackout. A blackout in the summer in NYC...awful.
