RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: The 'get a girlfriend' drive

I kinda care. The beauty of virtual school is that I can find a girl I like outside of school. I could bump into someone at the art museam, strike up an interesting conversation, and then exchange numbers to keep in touch. Then a relationship can bud from there. That's a bit romanticized, but it's just an example.

Anyway, I'd like a girlfriend, but I'm in no rush. I'd only do it if it was a serious relationship without high school bullshit. If I have to wait until I graduate, so be it.

The 'get a girlfriend' drive

^Same. I'm putting off dating until I'm 18 at the least, when my contacts aren't determined by an institution and my parents, and I can get to know people much more better. If I told that to my brother though he'd freak out.

The 'get a girlfriend' drive

I just wish that I was in a position to meet more people in the first place. Right now, with the unschooling and the being-snowed-in-here-in-rural-Maine-without-a-proper-vehicle...yeah.

I do recall vestiges of the whole popularity contest thing from middle school, though. Sometimes I wonder how I'd navigate the minefield that is high school dating, because I'd sure as Hell like to try, even if most of it is painful bullshit. Because right now, I'm stuck between the fact that people who lose their virginity when in their 20s usually do better in relationships, and the fact that I jay just be missing out on good times.

Bah, the notion that high school is largely sex is probably pap anyway.

Virginity. A funny outdated notion in my opinion...

The 'get a girlfriend' drive

Yeah, we place an awful lot of emphasis on the 'hey brodude, gotta get laid!'

Thing is, though, I really would like to experience it at least once before I die. I mean just a couple of years ago I was pretty damn overweight and sad, and had written myself off as a failure in romance. Then I got a bit better and resolved to turn myself around. It doesn't help that for most of my life I've usually been somewhat socially awkward and isolated. I like to think I'm slowly getting better, though!

My 1,000th post is about sex. Go figure.

All you need is confidence...to the point of being a egotistical maniac(with a bit of room for the women).
Then you feel like you can talk with anyone.

Course difference between inflated ego and being egotistical is that an inflated one is like a balloon. Empty in the inside.

RE: The 'get a girlfriend' drive

Society really does seem to also want to hold dating in it's cold, iron grip. Dating, love, romance, all are hampered by constraints set by society. Mass media play into this by showing the 'only way to find love': dating, lavishing gifts on another person, getting married, having children, and dying. Why must society want everything to be rigid and set in stone, even something that is supposed to be tempestuous?

Media's portrayal of love, romance, dating is a bunch of BS.

Don't bother trying to gain advice from it.

RE: The 'get a girlfriend' drive

HS dating is BS to me because it's mostly from puberty and the hormone changes. Might as well have HS swinging/free makeout clubs. At least that's more honest.

The 'get a girlfriend' drive

HS needs some of that free love!

Get it all out in a healthy, somewhat supervised, sexually charged event.

The 'get a girlfriend' drive

My mind was blown when I realized I didn't have to look for a relationship in my high school. Good thing, too; not only do I seem to have better luck striking connections outside it, but the girls in it are too...influenced by society, and emotionally draining. High school dating could have been a nightmare if I'd tried harder at it, and I'm so glad I didn't.

I just don't try at all, and henceforth exist in a state of tranquil apathy.

So did I. I'm one of the few blessed enough to have love come looking for me.

I don't think that being in high school means that you can't properly hold a relationship. Nor does being young mean you can't properly or adequately be in/find love. That's ageism

Yeah, the more I think about it the more high school dating sounds less exciting and more...exciting in the sense that crossing a minefield is exciting. I'm not exactly an expert on every social cue and rule out there, and slathering the partly-manufactured, partly-Orwellian high school culture all over it would make things worse.

Dating in high school is bound by a byzantine set of rules. Add ruthless scrutiny by your peers to that mix and you are left with a void and many wasted hours.

Byzantine huh? Wonder what would happen if a socially...different spanner were thrown in the works.

By that I mean someone who could follow procedure but doesn't; who's basically a blunt jokester. As opposed to a sociopath or something.
