RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

avoiding smoking

So i try to smoke rarely, generally about once or twice a month I will hit a hookah bar. but lately i have been doing it more frequently and im beginning to get cravings... which is not good for a number of reasons. number 1 is because smoking "killed" my grandpa (fucker was 93 years old, he died of old age...) but my mom would murder me if she smelled smoke on me, so i have to last till the end of this school year. number 2 is because i hate cigarettes. alot. I really really really dont like the idea of smoking a pack a day.... but im getting. goddamn. cravings. obviously if i get a habit i can't hookah all the time, its impractical and expensive. I cant own one either, and im trying to think of healthier alternatives. there IS the electronic cig, but i feel like its very stupid and is intended to be used to quit, not to start up a habit.

of course, i could try to ignore the cravings and stress out like a whore in church, but i enjoy the hookah bars too much... feels bad man.

Re: avoiding smoking

I have a lot of self control with cigs, I can go X amount of time with no cigs, it differs between people. I do it because I enjoy it, but I limit myself.

If you want to quit, go cold turkey. Otherwise, limit yourself. Do it now whilst the cravings aren't as bad.

Re: avoiding smoking

I have no real cravings for cigarettes unless I'm undergoing massive stress at the moment, or social smoking, although the latter has yet to happen. Crossed my mind, though, since I hang out with a HOUSE FULL OF SMOKERS (except for the two kids and one gal). Hell, I don't even buy my own smokes... I've bought them for the old man, but that's about it.

Basically, I'm trying to say don't buy your own smokes = less convenience = less smoking, don't social smoke, avoid stress whenever possible (even though you're in school, so it's understandably difficult), and try putting toothpicks between your lips instead of cigs. I shit you not, that last one kept me off smoking for the VAST MAJORITY of my life. Probably because it fulfills the desire to have something hanging between your lips.

Okay, ever since ciggs became FSC it has been 100x worse to smoke them. So hooka>ciggs. I agree with you on that. As for what to do just do as you please. If your mother questions you about it be like "Bitch, Scott's mom smokes" or something like that. Extra points if you say it like that too. But if she does question you about it just say you were over at __________'s house and that thiet parent or older sibling smokes.

Considering I've had a grand total equivalent of 2 cigarettes in my life, only one full one, and haven't so much as touched an individual fag since the dead end of June, I would say I'm not addicted to smoking. Of course, I'm also not a regular smoker.

Rolling your own also makes it unfiltered and ultra harsh.

As for myself I was a smoker at one point. I picked it up late highschool and a pack would last me a week+. Then when I went to college I picke dup that rate and a pack would last me a couple days to a week. Then I moved back home and got my first job in a restraunt. The environment breeds smokers; stressful with shitty hours. A pack lasted a week at max. I also got put on probation at this point. Then I went back to college and it got even worse. A pack lasted me two-three days. Then they jacked the price and made them FSC. I hated the new taste, they made me nausious and were now more expensive. I told myself I need to quit. And I did... well kinda. I no longer baought myself packs and was forced to bum smokes if I wanted one. Then I limited myself to like one a day. Then I only smokeed when I was drunk and/or high. Now I only smoke when I drink.

Yeah :/ You could always buy a cigarette holder, you can get them with filters built in. I know a few people that do that. Kind of a pain to carry all that shit around though unless you have a case.
