RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

RE: Geopolitical Games
Yesish.
I like Geopolitical with emphasis on war. So like Hearts of Iron for example.
Paradox games are quite fun, though so big that they usually have bugs that need working out.
I "obtained" Heaets of Iron 3 when it came out, but encountered a bug that made gamelay impossible(the time would get stuck at 12:00am and nothing would happen). I just decided to wait a while for the quirks to get fixed.

RE: Geopolitical Games
Interesting. It's been a while since I seriously dived into games, but those look worth checking out.
Geopolitical Simulator has a whole page on its use in the Education Sector:
"The various versions of Geopolitical Simulator are already widely used by the education sector, since this extremely realistic simulator of today’s world helps students understand how it functions in many fields, including the economy and politics. The game includes over a thousand actions that a head of state can perform in the fields of politics and economics, but also in budgetary, financial, military, security, cultural, and other areas."
I can see why. Why can't portions of school be replaced with using games like this to learn?
It'd be interesting to have a game like this with an emphasis on education itself, and all the politics, economics, and philosophy of that.
Do you ever play in networked mode? What's that like?

I disagree. Mainly because nothing exists on NS except your words.
But that's what makes NS perfect geopolitical simulator. You have ABSOLUTE control beyond that of what's even realistically possible.

That's a question I've been asking. I'll be blunt about this: this generation loves interactive entertainment. It's become molded into our minds, just like a lot of things have been in the past. But there's nothing wrong with that. The problem isn't with the students, but rather with the schools. They're so stubbornly slow to adapt to the much more interactive minds of students. They don't just want to read text, they want to experience it. A geopolitical game for school would be amazing.
Also, to answer networked mode, I don't play it. It's mostly just trying to destroy each other and create a World War III with various players taking control of a superpower, and see which player remains.

Exactly. Even when I read text, I want to interact with it, like by commenting or discussing the text... adding some of my own... and ultimately doing something with it it.
Fortunately, quite a few people see the potential for games and narratives in education, but yeah, schools are slow to change. That poses a political scenario itself, though, which would be interesting to simulate.

Ah, that doesn't sound like the geopolitics of the modern world. It makes for one kind of game, but that's not what leadership (or even war) tends to be about in practice.

I haven't tried out NationStates, but I like the prospect of "realistic" simulators (even reality offers lots of room for creativity and imagination!)
But, I suppose each have their advantages.

RE: Geopolitical Games
It requires some imagination, for NS.
Mostly because the "game" itself has purely minimal "prepared" aspects to it. The only way to really interact with others and better define your nation is to roleplay or create an epic factbook thread(basically a detailed deacription of your nation either on their forum, or the wiki if you know how to use wikis).
For example, you want an army? Well, have fun writing up everything from uniforms to weapons to doctrines to structure. You can skip some, copy paste info from real life, and give brief summaries but those who put in the time or effort generally create some wonderful things.
Especially those who create a "Business". Thats a difficult type of roleplay in my opinion. Really have to focus on making it presentable and accessible. Otherwise your thread will not really have much attention as you'd like.

Geopolitical Games
Geopolitical and strategy games are one of my favorite genres. The more notable ones I've played include Total War, SimCity and NationStates. Age of Empires is good for real-time strategy; I recently picked up the remake of the second game on Steam, with its expansion pack. Wonderful stuff.
I've been meaning to look into the Paradox games (and the Civ series), but there's an old game about being a covert agent I showed brainiac that I think you all would like as well: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/139/Co...ction.html
...I need to play it as well.

Geopolitical Games
Civ series is good. Only wish they hadn't removed good features from various games. Like 4 doesn't have the "nuclear warfare cause massive geographic destruction and flooding" but it does have fallout, which just destroys food(and enough nuclear explosions start creating deserts).
There is one old DoS game I played the demo of when I obtained another game. It came with the package in the folder. It was fantasy medieval. Can't remember it's name...

Geopolitical Games
So I downloaded DOSBox to my gaming laptop and decided to try out Conflict. For an early 90's political game it's good so far. No sound though, so I need to find some suitably 'international tension/espionage' music to go with it.

All good music, but shortly after I made that post inspiration struck. I downloaded a copy of YouTube Downloader (which no longer sucks ass by the way) and downloaded instrumental, mostly traditional Arabic/Israeli music. I'm talking about stuff from the Rum Band and somber renditions of the Hatikva here, and it's really great stuff.
Thanks for the suggestions though. I might go looking for a lower key MI/007 theme, and I already have the Red October music.

I've played SimCity (SNES,) NationStates, and SimCity 2000 (DOSBox.) I like SimCity and NationStates, but the menus and road placement alone made me dislike SimCity 2000.

SimCity 2000 was pretty fun, compared to SimCity 3000. I found it less...serious?
But it was a pain in the ass.

SC2K was an excellent classic. It's the game I cut my teeth on, so to speak!
And a big thanks to xcriteria for linking here from the G+ thread about the school survey! It's amazing that even the fine folks over there can derail threads as well as we can.
I encourage everyone who reads this thread to play the games I link to as well.
