RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Pathway System

I think I've mentioned this a few times, but I've never actually talked that much about it. Does your school use this, or have you been in one that used this? What were your experiences with this? I'm kinda curious as my school's pathway system has several problems.

The main one is that you can only have one pathway at a time, and after your freshman year you can't really change. Another problem I have with it is that it gives privileges to students on some pathways, while sometimes giving none to others. An example is the pathway for Coding and the pathway for marketing. The pathway of coding, at the moment, seems to have no inherent benefits over any other pathway, while the Marketing Pathway allows students to participate in DECA and do Co-Op, which from what I've gathered allows you to leave school early to work(which, even if I had a mediocre job, although why I would enjoy having this is another story).

RE: Pathway System

Are these formally-defined "pathways," or is this more of a pattern you've noticed?

This is perhaps more commonly known as "tracking" students into particular paths forward. Same thing, though.

That's especially messed up for people who want to combine interests and explore possibilities...

What kind of school do you go to?

Pathway System

I go to a Public High School. And it is known as the pathway system where I live. However some people think it's to know what classes students are in. The pathway system is to help students on a 'carrier pathway' to be more successful later in lives. To be honest I see it as, while an interesting idea, a broken system. The system may work at times, it's highly flawed. To be honest you have to get a certain amount of credits towards certain classes, I don't know what happens if you get the credits.

RE: Pathway System

Ahh, something like this?

(That took me a while to find... most education references to the word "pathway" are within higher ed.)

Yeah, that needs to be replaced with customized "pathways," as well as a system for exploring pathways.

I wonder what would happen if you asked to develop and propose a customized pathway. And... find other students who want to do that, too. That's the future of learning, after all... why won't your school adapt to your actual needs and preferences?

I could help design a proposal, and maybe we could turn it into a project other people could use to propose changes.

StuVoice.org might be a good partner for that.

Here's a new video from them:

Watch on YouTube

I don't know exactly how to go from their Digital Backpack to actually having a meaningful conversation within a school system, but I see they have Arne Duncan, the Secretary of Education, facilitating their next Twitter chat on Monday evening.

That could be interesting.

Pathway System

Yes, yes it could. Also the link you provided is similar to that, however there are a bit more choices than what is given on the site. However there are some ridiculous pathways. Anywho, I'll send you a link to the actual pathways thing for my school(however it has every class that my school offers, however the first 6 or so pages are the most useful ones.) I'm not going to post it here, as I want to minimize the chance of being caught.
