RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

"You're just a whiny teenager!"

This is more or less an observation, but I thought this was worth posting.

What I notice about teachers, school officials, and the school environment in general is the idea that issues and problems that are directly relevant to your life are not considered important, or sometimes not even considered problems at all. For example, I hate having to have a rigorous sleep schedule to accommodate what the school wants, but apparently that's my fault if I can't have a decent sleep schedule. It's totally not the school's ineptitude to accommodate a lot of the students. Thanks for the sleep deprivation and the effects that come with it, school!

Something that I also see is mental illness and school. I think it's true that a lot of teenagers feel mood swings and other things offset by puberty, it seems there's been some kind of confusion between real mental illness and simply "being a teenager". A dangerous ideal that I've noticed is that what you might have is simply "being a teenager" or something, and though sometimes it is, other times there may actually be a serious issue that may get worse without treatment or even basic understanding. There's some kind of confusion between mental illness and being a teenager, and I feel it's only gotten worse, especially with all the supposed ADHD "cases" going up, but with suicide rates still troubling and sometimes there's no idea why.

Just my thoughts.

RE: "You're just a whiny teenager!"

The mental illness part is certainly true. One of the kids I know has been diagnosed with Asperger's and depression, because he doesn't like school and doesn't like his home. I think psychological manuals like promote this dangerous fad.

The part about people not caring about your problems if you're a teenager is a sad fact of modern society. A textbook example of ageism if I ever saw one.

Do you know that kid real well? Whether he truly has Asperger syndrome or not can be subjective. It's important not to make assumptions about people because of the lack of knowledge we may have on their mind. However, it is true that many people can be misdiagnosed, as with the ADHD "epidemic" we have in the United States.

It always seems that there are certain problems that are "teenage problems" and are taken a lot less seriously then "adult problems". What makes "teenage problems" so much less important? Because we're developing? Being a teenager is when one also begins to start feeling strong emotions. I think the perception of "typical teenage life" that has been continuously promoted by the media has helped project the image of teenage problems being much less meaningful.

RE: "You're just a whiny teenager!"

I found this on yahoo answers yesterday, sorry if some of it doesn't make any sense but the guy has some pretty good points

Quote:Edit: I have not seen ONE answer from an adult that says they don't treat us as sub-human, nor have I seen a single one saying that its wrong. So I guess they think its fine to treat teenagers as Sub-human. Fucking adults.

Binka, you obviously cannot think logically. First off, yeah, we do stupid things. But so do adults. And they did stupid things when they were our age. So that's not even a point.

Secondly, just because my brain's not fully developed that means you can treat me like I'm six, talk down to me, and tell me my brain is not fully developed? And what would give you that right even if I was six?

And lastly, maybe the reason we don't respect our parents is because they don't respect us. JUST because they created me, why do they have the right to be so condescending and have the "Holier than thou" attitude? The DON'T respect our opinions, they WON'T listen to our logical arguments, and they CAN'T accept the fact that we can think on our own. No, PARENTS are the ones who can't think logically, and I can prove it with a line every parent has spoken.

After a teenager makes a valid, LOGICAL, argument, and the parent can't think of any response other than "Because I said so!", LOGIC follows that there is no LOGICAL reason not to do something JUST because someone who created you said so, when in less than a year I'm gunna be on my own anyway. If they could give an actual reason, then great. But most times they can't. Why?
There are none.
Except "Because I said!"

And the whole reason teenagers are so angry with adults is because of adults like you, who talk down to us, don't listen to our opinions, will probably dismiss my answer because "Its just some guy with an undeveloped brain, why should i listen to him?", and think you're better because you can "think logically."

I've got news for you: SO CAN WE!

And what are you doing in the Adolescent section anyway?

edit: And of course, My Immortal MJ doesn't actually make an argument against most of my points. Just more babble about why they treat us like **** and its ok. And siting television shows as references, because they are of course valuable sources of information.

And just because most teens are, you treat us ALL that way? That's like assuming every black man is carrying a gun and in a gang. Or every white van you see is a pervert stalking his next child victim. Its the ignorant adults that are the worst. Teenage-ist *****.

I'm 17, a cadet on the local fire department, I live on my own and i financially support myself. I have dragged dead dogs out of a house after a fire, helped pick dead and severely injured men and women up off the street, and recently lost a good friend to suicide.
Don't talk to me about life-experience.

I can't say I know the kid very well, but I know him well enough to be pretty sure he doesn't have Asperger's. He has multiple friends, hobbies, and a girlfriend (something that none in my group has, and he kept his first girlfriend for multiple years). I didn't make an assumption about his mental health, but I think the psychologist did. He saw the kid as unhappy, and thought to himself: 'he must have a disorder! He can't simply be unhappy!'. So yeah, I think teenagers are discriminated against in psychology, because the psychologist doesn't really listen to their stories and just slaps a sticker saying 'you have this disease' on them.

Interesting. If that's the case, that sounds like a very incompetent psychologist.

I'll admit I have a dislike for so-called 'commercial psychology', but I don't see most psychologists as ludicrously incompetent. However, I have noticed a trend when psychologists are treating teens. Teenagers are more likely to get a mental disorder slapped on them than being listened to. I don't exactly know why psychologists do this, but I would guess that they do this because they too suffer from ageism and just don't want to listen to teens, or because they can write out more jolly, candy-like pills to their patients (and cash a fat paycheck).

RE: "You're just a whiny teenager!"

I don't feel like creating a separate thread for this.

On Wednesday in History class, we were doing massive testing, and the teacher was checking our notebooks if we finished a painstakingly long assignment in which we had to answer 73 goddamn questions. I answered all but one, and the teacher called me lazy for not answering the one which I didn't have notes on.

Wait what excuse me?

I completed every damn question except 1, and that's the nice words for me? I'm lazy? That's fucking bullshit.

I called out her crap. But in a very passive tone. I began arguing that just because I didn't answer one question didn't warrant a label, and I also said that you couldn't assume such things like that without knowing me very well. She eventually just said "okay" and said I was "over-sensitive". No. I was just tired of receiving bullcrap that I was an inferior person because of my age. Best thing was that I did it in a very passive tone that could be taken seriously, not an overtly aggressive tone.

You won't believe how many teachers do this. My school uses a tyrannical piece of software to register data, and up until a couple of weeks ago I could pride myself on having no marks that said 'homework forgotten'. I was proud of myself, because when you have no marks like this, the teachers cut you some slack on a variety of things. But, during maths, I missed two questions because I didn't understand them. The teacher checked our homework and I explained why I missed them, but he just smiled a shit eating grin at me and said, 'well, hehehe, this is more than just a small gap in your homework' and he gave me a mark. This was in a class where I was one of the few people who did any work.

"You're just a whiny teenager!"

I've encountered agism, with my mom. Oddly enough my mom is against Agism...... well against Agism against older adults. My mom talks down to me, doesn't value what I want to do(saying we have to do what THEY want to do, before we can do mine, and that I can't think logically.) When I told her I was depressed, she just dismissed that as me, "being a teen." and didn't even think about looking into it or taking me to a psychologist(even though that wouldn't have helped, it could have helped to at least do this as it would show she would be somewhat concerned.). Not to mention that she refused to realize that I'm a night person, and I tend to like the night more and instead tried to make me a day person...

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

Yeah, the brain still developing thing is bullshit. It's true that it is still developing but so what? The brain always develops until death (or it does, if the natural pathways are maintained), it's called 'lifelong learning'. If you're talking about structural developing, it's 25 that the brain is fully developed.

If I seem rude to you, please call me on it gently.

Sadly, many adults think 'structural development' is the same as 'emotional development' or 'cognitive development'. I have too many examples to prove them wrong with.

I'd proudly argue with them. I'm probably a lot smarter than the dipshits on Yahoo, for example.

If they see a teenager who is so intelligent, they always say "you're growing up too fast!" or some bullshit. No, I'm not. I just decided to learn outside of that institutional prison and gain more knowledge.

Well, it kinda is linked to 'emotional development' because the last part of the brain to be fully developed is the part that says 'Hold on. That's a dumb idea'. But you know, when the world is changing, the old ways don't work any more. We're not sure but it looks like one of the original purposes of that age was to survive the ice age.

Most people are smarter than the lowest common denominator of knowledge that is Yahoo Answers. And I'm really surprised if they say 'you're growing up too fast!'. I usually get told I'm some kind of messiah figure because I'm slightly more intelligent than my peers.

"You're just a whiny teenager!"

People have told me I'm growing up fast, or behave in a far more mature fashion compared to my peers.

Let me clarify by pointing out it's not always said in a positive note. Supposedly acting like an adult when you aren't an adult, and growing a beard to appear older(my beard gives me a 2-4 year older appearance), is not right unless you are an adult and you're 30+ for the beard.

So...Don't act like a teen, but if you're a teen, you can't act like an adult either.(I'm not supporting the usage of the word "act" because that implies it to be pretend. My actions and behaviors are not pretend).

"You're just a whiny teenager!"

By using the "Fuck it!" button when my logical processing comes up with a close to 50-50 probabity of preferred vs unpreferred outcome.

It's like a logic flush intended to work as a tie-breaker. An action without logical reasoning, but with enough impulsive intentions behind it that it might just work. A "leap of faith".

Dull people are dull because they ignore/suppress the emotional aspect. Stupid people are stupid because they ignore/suppress the logical aspect.

What kind of logic? If you're talking about what society deems to be logical, I use that solely as a consideration to take into account when my actions might affect others. If you're talking about hard logic, I use that to influence my perception of whatever stimulus it is my passions persuade me to respond to.

Neither form of logic determines my actions.

I think the way to be is to be driven by passion, consider a logical reaction to that passion, and act in between.

You won't believe what this one adult said-

-Many are disrespectful
-Many dont use their heads
-Many push the buttons of their parents
-Lets face it, many are flat out, honest to goodness, grade-A
SL-UTS... and their response to someone trying to change them is "Make me."

-Teen moms are staggering. The number of them still depending on mommy and daddy is even more staggering. And the teens moms that die from an abortion, I feel no sympathy for. What a WASTE.

-The way I've seen kids treat their parents is a disgrace. They use the "Oh, I'm an adolescent" crap and it works. (And if you watch tv shows of trading moms or whatever, one girl flipped out because someone asked her to do chores and a pair of siblings cursed someone out because they were late and they got a "warning" (keeping the company behind.) and another set of teens cursed a homeowner out because he told them not to smoke in HIS house... he caught them, punished them and they got mad.

-Gee.... EVER wonder why many places DONT hire teenagers? Seriously, think about it. I run my father's business from time to time and the teenagers tend to be the bad apples making the company STINK. I hear one of his companies in New York AVOIDS teenagers.

-Uppity teens are the worst. You know, the ones who think they know everything, have no life experience, then when left to their own devices, they come whining back to mommy. Yeah, those kinds.

-You all WHINE. Whine, whine whine and whine some more. And with your still forming high voices, all that whining is enough to make anyone wanna punch someone in the mouth.

-Many teens feel they are invinsible. If I see a teen next to me a car over on the road, jabbering away on their cell, I'll drive FAAAR away from them. My cousin was killed by a drunk teen driver, one of my neighbors friends was run off the road by a teen on their cell phone. I saw a pair of teens open their door to their car and hit a car next to them with their door, leaving a dent in the other car. They LAUGHED before driving away, hooting and hollering out the window.

-Watch Maury, or episodes of Law and Order with teens in it and that's enough proof. Many adults just leave you teens alone anyways and deal with you when we need to or when you bother us. They dont make enough Advil to deal with you guys.

-Many teens do drugs. Nuff said. Yes, adults do drugs too, but combine drugs with a still-forming brain. NOT cool.

-Adults make mistakes. Many make them, but they have backup plans, resources and the finances to brush themselves off from their mistakes. If we are struggling with our own worries, what makes you think WE have the time for YOUR antics?

If you are SO concerned about this OBVIOUS delliema amoungst the teenagers, MAYBE all of you um... so-called non-ignorant ones should come together and warn the other teens.

Teenagers have to earn their wings. Not just bogard thrir way in and DEMAND the same treatment as high-ups. Yes, everyone deserves respect, but the little perks you envy on account of the adults... they are earned and a rite of passage. What's next, 6 year olds demanding they be let into strip joints and casinos? PLEASE.

It's like at a corperate job when a janitor on their first day wants to pipe up to the CEO of the Company and start making demands. But I'll tell ya one thing, that little pip squeak gets smacked down... same with teenagers... and most of them dont want to listen. We usually wait till the hormones die down and then we reason with you.

Just wait, ok, the teen phase will pass. The true-blue good teens are about 3 of 10

RE: "You're just a whiny teenager!"

>Says "You're all stupid"
>Can't spell "their"

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

"You're just a whiny teenager!"

Ugh, I'm tired with all these redundant spell/grammar corrections on the internet. It's like people can't think of making an insightful point so they choose the easiest way to make them feel superior. I don't even care if I agree or disagree with the said post with incorrect grammar/spelling, it just brings up no real points and leads to pissing contests with unwarranted self importance. And hell, people make typoes and overlook grammar errors by accident even if they know the correct spelling/grammar, it happens to me sometimes. It does not necessarily measure your intelligence either. And this may be partly the reason people feel insulted that I want to correct spelling.

On another note, enough bad experiences with certain people makes them turn sour. Yeah, it sucks. Though really, what an asshole for having no sympathy for those who die from abortion. Which is likely from unsafe self attempts from fear of parents finding out. And make up your mind, if a young teen actually has a child, don't be suprised that they may be dependent on parents income. That to be said, being a teen mother isn't a good thing as it is very inconvenient. The way I see it, teens should be very careful and take precautions. With sex being a taboo subject, it only makes it more fascinating, not discouraging.

Parents should be more supportive of teen sex being supportive of actual long-term contraception, not saying "don't have sex" because you all know how that usually goes. But it's difficult to discuss with parents, because no.

Also, lol it looks like she is using ""Reality"" and drama (also scripted) shows as a reference of how teens act. Reality my ass, it's all scripted and dramatised. Reality shows is an incredibly misleading description and needs to die. Yeah, let's use cowboy movies as a reference of how Texans act.

Disreguarding bad behaviour as "just a teen phase" isn't a good way to approach it. Who knows, that behaviour might still carry on to adulthood. And no, I'm not talking about school.

If you get talked to like you're looked down upon without doing anything wrong, then it's no suprise teens get annoyed.

That's not to say there are no bad apples out there. I already know some IRL, bleh.

RE: "You're just a whiny teenager!"

I know that I have depression. I exhibit all of the symptoms, my friends notice, my doctor has noticed it too. Yet when he suggests doing something about it such as applying medication my parents will not allow it and instead dismiss it as "tiredness" and "teenage angst". I know what you mean by this :(
