RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Thinking about becoming Pagan

Hi guys
I made an account a few months ago and then left.
I've always been atheist, but I'm thinking of becoming Pagan. I agree with pretty much everything. I'd be a mix of all the types, Wicca etc.
If I do, I was wondering how I should tell my parents about it. I'm pretty sure they'll let me, I'm just worried obviously about their reactions and how I should bring it up.
Also, I have thought of not telling them, but it will be quite hard to do a lot of the things which out permission, such as making an altar and celebrating the sabbats (festivals).
Any ideas?

What exactly do you mean by a mix, what are your beliefs?

RE: Thinking about becoming Pagan

I believe that everything in nature has a spirit or soul. I believe in the gods and goddesses but I think they represent the elements. Sort of a mix of Wicca, Celtic etc.

RE: Thinking about becoming Pagan

Have fun. There's really no need to tell anyone about it. If you think it might cause trouble to have your interest known, you might be better off keeping it to yourself for now. I know how it is to feel like you can't properly express your faith by being unable to make the relevant gestures externally, but in the end, it's all an internal, personal thing; the props can be put off for later (or taken out when needed and put away otherwise).

If you don't think your parents will necessarily be antagonistic toward this, it's probably only going to be as big a deal as you make it. If you treat it like it's this major issue such that you have to have a family meeting and "come out" about it, the attitude will catch on and there might be more fuss than the matter deserves. It's not a big deal, so don't make it one. Just mention that you've been reading about this sort of thing next time they ask what you've been up to lately -- a discussion of interests rather than some dramatic declaration.

RE: Thinking about becoming Pagan

The reason I'm concerned is because i know what my parents initial reaction will be. They'll say it like I haven't thought about it and I'll get bored of it in a week. I think I'm gonna wait a while first so when my parents say that, I can say "well actually I've been doing this for almost a year now" Smile

It sounds like you already have a plan. You don't need anyone else's approval to go for it.

Sounds like you might want to check out Druidry. They're pretty in line with what you believe and the way it's set up you can pretty much believe whatever the fuck you want in it so that's p cool. I've been thinking of practicing Atheistic druidry myself actually.
