RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

VZW Chaperone Phone Tracker
Verizon Wireless has this service called Chaperone. This allows adults to see where they're child is via phone. Not only that, but it can email smartphones every time you pretty much move.
When my conservative, overprotective dad found out about this, he took advantage of the program right away. So now whenever I'm out of his supervision, he can pretty much see everywhere I go.
This has had a lot of negative impacts on me. Lets just say this program is extremely glitchy. It can read from 5-150 miles off. And its done this on several occasions. Now my dad's imagination has led him to believe that I've been doing an array of things. This whole program is bullshit. I don't feel trusted. I don't feel secure in my privacy.
When I'm at my mom's house (my parents are divorced) I shouldn't have to get a phone call from my dad interrogating me of why I was at Target with my mom.
Do you think parents should do this to their kids? Even if the kid gets straight A's, has never had a sip of alcohol, misused drugs, messed around with girls, or even snuck out.
Fuuck that.
(I realize this rant was worded weird and was very unorganized.)

Re: VZW Chaperone Phone Tracker
Tell your dad to suck it and get your mom to pay your phone bill that way he cant have his stupid orwellian program.
Also, there was nothing wrong with your post. It was fine.

Re: VZW Chaperone Phone Tracker
I really wish I could tell him that. But he has too many things to hold over my head. If told him what I thought about anything, that would pretty much be the end of my life.

Would it be possible to move in with your mom?

Re: VZW Chaperone Phone Tracker
Its something we've been trying to figure out, just my mom and I. My dad is a self righteous bastard who wants to live my life for me, since he fucked up so bad when he was a teenager, and I haven't. There are two main reasons I haven't moved in yet, though. First, my mom says she doesn't want to put me through my dad's reaction. She thinks he'll degrade me to the point where I'll snap and do something stupid. Second, school is sort of an issue for me. It'd be hard for me to stop seeing some of the people that mean most to me consistently. But I'll eventually get over that.
It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.

Re: VZW Chaperone Phone Tracker
I did hear of one good sideaffect of this thing.
A girl got her phone stolen at school, and, because her mom had the tracker on it, they were able to trace it back to the kids house. So, she and her mom drove over there, knocked on the front door, and totally got her phone back.
Personally, I would've called the police, but, whatever. she got her phone back.
Otherwise - what a violation of privacy. Kids learn through making their own mistakes, and most of them manage to make it home at night. As a society, we need to get out of the "Super Parent" phase, and let our kids make their own mistakes, and learn their own lessons. Even people without the most thoughtful parents still manage to grow up, and a good many of them become successful. Overachieving parents are trying too hard, and probably damaging their kids in the process.
Bummer.
Because, you know what happens? They go to school, figure that they're out of their parents sight, and act like FREAKIN' MENTALLY RETARDED KINDERGARDENERS.

Re: VZW Chaperone Phone Tracker
There's a thing like this for AT&T. Because my phone sucks and our family is stuck with shitty Verizon, my dad had me test AT&T out for them. He learned there was a Chaperone-like program for AT&T phones, and my mom heard about it, and it took hours to convince her not to do it.

I agree, this is a violation of the person's privacy.

Wait, your mom had to convince herself to not put the tracking thing in your phone?

No, he was talking about a different post, Sherlock.
Tracking devices should be outlawed. That and keyloggers. They're both terrible and an invasion of privacy.

Re: VZW Chaperone Phone Tracker
Does the program use GPS or just the cell phone towers? If it's not GPS that would explain why it's so inaccurate.

Because you do it every other fucking post, and do it over the smallest possible things. The typo in his post made it not make sense, which is why I asked him what he meant. You insist on getting pissy over people putting an apostrophe one letter out of place.

True, but for keyloggers you can just get a scrambler.
