RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Again, I agree with you. School does teach you things. And once again, you are missing the point entirely. It's not that I disagree with school's mission or the things it teaches. What I object to is that the students are deprived of any choice in the matter. As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.

ITS OVER 9000!!!
srsly though. not to mention 46,000 of debt per U.S. citizen. If the U.S. still exists in 50 years, the government will rob us of this money one way or another.

We had a surplus for that to make changes at a later date but then fox news favorite day 9/11 happened and a big giant 10 year war happened. Also were never going to get anywhere because our politicians are in the backpocket of large oil companies. Everyone cries about how much MC SS WF cost but first we need to make sure everyone is paying taxes and get rid of all loopholes.

They say that Japan was going to be the next economic superpower when the U.S. started declining. That was in the 1980's.

Hmm, good point. Japan was and still is pretty advanced. Not much they can do though unless they go on a militaristic expansion. China has a nice sized country, it could repeat the U.S. easily though.

Not interested in the video, but Duquesne University? Hah, whenever you drive into Oakland after merging off 279 South you have to travel basically right next to the campus.

Hidden stuff:
Oakland: An area of the "downtown" part of Pittsburgh.
279 South: A freeway that goes south into the city.
Duquesne: One, I dare you to pronounce this correctly without looking it up online, and two, it's a university located just before Oakland.

In 20 years, probably yes.

In 40 years most likely no.

Due to the one child policy, China faces demographic collapse on a scale not seen before. Bad demographics are hurting Japan, but China's problems dwarf even that of their neighbors. Their workforce will basically halve in size in the 2030s. And unlike western nations they don't have a good system for caring for the elderly.

China's ruling communist party gets its legitimacy from one thing: economic growth. China can't turn back into a North Korea like state. Its people are too smart and worldly for that. Right now the government placates the population by accelerating economic growth. During the recession, China had to launch a massive bailout to reach their growth targets. But the government can only do so much. During the late 2020s or early 2030s China's economic bubble will burst and the government will loose legitimacy. It will either have to liberalize or violence will follow.

Basically, America has a lot of short-term problems, but in the long run we are better off than China.
