RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

"Write me a little report of [my video], so I know you watched it, or you get another warning. One of my other goals is to make this forum a bit of my own class...So, tell me, how you feel about the new rule of having you do homework? Or you get another warning. So, do you want to do this or not?...Please send a PM and tell me if you're willing or not. I will probably give you 24 hours to send the PM. No PM will indicate to me that, no, you don't want to do things in this new way. So, you will be saying goodbye."

So you hate us because you're actually thankful? Biggrin

Sort of. Basically, I hate you for not telling me this sooner so I could jailbreak those stupid 13 years of R-12. That and ho- bu- wha- ho- wh- well, let's just say my jaw is still on the floor.

I always find it's fun to direct hatred into a sexual outlet.

There is so much more out there now than there was even a few years ago. MOOCs like Coursera are not much more than a year old. It would be great to let more people know about all these resources. The result might be a lot of jaws dropping on the floor.

However, once you really dive in and realize the implications for what you can learn, it can easily become overwhelming. This is where some kind of strategy is needed for learning (and teaching) that radically differs from the "spoon-fed what you learned in school to the next generation of imprisoned students" approach that most of us are used to.

One term to describe the challenge is opportunity overwhelm:

Common Dilemmas: What Do I Do When There are Too Many Options?
http://advancedriskology.com/common-dile...y-options/

Learners outpacing teachers

Here's a great TEDx talk from Will Richardson, author of Why School? How Education Must Change When Learning and Information Are Everywhere. As that summary explains, the ebook gets at how online learning is changing up the learning experience for a lot of people (whose teachers have no concept of them learning "outside of the box.")

Watch on YouTube

However, digging through all that's out there is a challenge. Which menu of information do you trust? How long would it take to dig through all of the menus, which led to more menus, along with massive blocks of content? How long would it take to apply any of that, in any particular situation in real life?

Jailbreaking education

The time to jailbreak education is here. In fact, David Blake, founder of the online credentialing site Degreed is using "jailbreaking the degree" as the company's tagline. His article Jailbreaking the Degree on TechCrunch explains some of this philosophy. The door is open to so many possibilities.

Implications:

1. Imagine the situation of students trapped in that K12 framework who are starting to see all these possibilities, as well. And not just students, but teachers, as well. Suddenly, they can know a lot more things, and they can learn things from their students who can go peruse the internet for hours. The magical title of "teacher" is no longer buried behind the walls of a college degree.

But, teachers aren't paid to do either of those things -- they're paid to teach their subject. And students aren't graded to learn those things, or teach their teachers -- they're graded on the subjects each subject-bound teacher is being paid to teach them.

2. With all the links to follow and content to soak up, it's easier then ever to get stuck in loops, missing out on relevant items, experiences, or parts of life. That's one of the problems of K12 or factory-style jobs, but it can easily become a new kind of problem with open-ended exploration of the web.

This video hits on some of those problems, like the ability to surf in an endless manner, and the "echo chamber" effect of getting stuck in the same loop, repeating the same things. Finally it connects these questions to the topic of stories.
