RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I love that They Might Be Giants did the theme song to that. Do you mind if I steal the about me thing?

Malcolm In The Middle

The spy movie the actor of Malcolm in the Middle played in ruined the show for me. Now I can't watch it without remembering him as that corny teen spy in that movie nobody probably remembers.

RE: Malcolm In The Middle

Agent Cody Banks was the shit. It was a great geek revenge fantasy, at least before I found Ender's Game. And oh, the gadgets.

I liked it when I watched it. However, now that I think of it, I find it to be hilarious due to it's plot.

I read the Ender's Game book 3-4 times. It was originally an option for summer reading, but I'm glad I chose it. I used to want to be Ender when I was reading it. I'll probably watch the movie simply because I was such a big fan of it.

Never read any of the other books. Sometimes I wish certain movies/games/books had more information, more sequels. However, some are just so good that even if it never goes in-depth about certain things or clarifies certain aspects, I'll never indulge in a sequel or prequel.

It's not in the UK Netflix. Sucks. But yes, I loved that show! Biggrin

Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow were awesome books. The movie was okay too.

Also, Agent Cody Banks was not a bad movie.

Interesting. i've never seen that show, but I'm always on the lookout for what people find interesting, since I want to make a show about all these school issues.

From TV Tropes' Malcom in the Middle article:

"The titular Malcolm is the frustrated and eternally-perplexed "middle" child of a middle-class home who is discovered to have a genius-level IQ. The show follows his attempts to keep his head down and get through life despite the social stigma of being "smart" and the rest of his family: his sociopathic brothers (whose behaviour has rubbed off on Malcolm himself), his emotionally-immature father, and his overbearing and perpetually-stressed mother Lois."

As most of these shows, i imagine it doesn't deconstruct school or the field of psychology... so there's work to be done. Wink

"Malcolm had the advantage of being shot film-style rather than in front of a studio audience, and the added freedom allowed it to achieve a tighter pacing and surreal tone more reminiscent of an animated cartoon (although at the worst could also create a frantic, confused mess). Like many more recent sitcoms, it contains no Laugh Track. In fact, Malcolm is considered (along with British sitcom Spaced) by many critics to be the Trope Codifier of the high-quality, single-camera, laugh-track-free sitcoms that are so prevalent today."

Hmm... thoughts on that?

I definitely prefer shows without a laugh track. I'm glad that trend is going away.

Laugh tracks are annoying. Sometimes the track plays yet I don't understand what's so funny.

Sometimes if even distracts you from the funny.

I like laugh tracks. Sure, they are used in the assumption that viewers are morons, but what they lack in subtlety they make up for in effectiveness. It is true that a show feels funnier when it has a laugh track, although that is no substitute for true comedy.

RE: Malcolm In The Middle

Considering that there are a lot of movies with comedy, and no laughing track, its probably safe to say laughing tracks are starting to outlive their purpose(though I do hate anything that is totally void of any background ambience. Its why I hated those morning soap operas. Plus they looked like crappy filming. It reminded me of cheap cardboard)
