RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Exams and other stuff

This isn't really a rant, just me rambling about college, options and exams. If you're not bothered about it, there is really no point in reading all'a this XD I just felt I needed to say something about it, really. XD

So my exams are starting pretty fucking soon. I recently got grades back for my mock and happened to get a lot of D's. Fortunately, none of these made much of a difference to my predicted grades which will be sent off to colleges. I'm stressing about college more than my GCSEs which is pretty stupid as if I don't pass secondary, I won't even get to go to college. The thing is with my school, they start nagging you from the start of year 11 to get your head right about options and stuff. I don't know how many of you are from the UK but the system is shitty. The thing is, I have no fucking idea what I want to do, nor do I want to choose NOW! I'd like to think of myself as a "go with the flow" kind of person. Anyway, I ended up choosing Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and History. I suppose I'm gonna go in the direction of a career in Science. You need approximately four subjects to start with and you get the option to drop one subject the next year (I think). Anyway, even though I'm not entirely bothered about my future career or whatever, I still want to get into the top colleges. I just do. I'm not a hard-working person on the whole, I like to keep things short and simple. So, my predicted grades are the most essential. Mine on the whole includes 3 C's, 5 B's and only 2 fucking A's. None of the subjects which I particularly revised for. The thing is, I do a kind of intermediate science, which gives me three separate grades for Bio, Chem and Physics unlike others who simply get a grade for "Science". I got a B in Bio and Chem and A for Physics. I was planning to use Physics as a substitute for Maths in college, however, it's not really allowed or more, 'advisable' (as in most careers in Science finds it necessary for Maths in college). So I'm stuck in a bit of a dilemma. I wanna do Chemistry in some top-ass college, I just do. Unfortunately, to get accepted into this college you need a predicted B for Mathematics, which I've got a C for. There's no way I can bump up my C to a B before them getting sent to college. I was hoping to end up with an A for my predicted for Chem or Bio as if I get at least two A's and a B for my separate sciences I am likely to get into the college with the C in Maths, however, no matter how awesome my Science teacher can be, she is simply not allowed to change the grades now that it's been put on hard copy. So, now I'm sort of gambling with my future (honestly, I find it quite thrilling XD) and just waiting for the college to accept my grades without yet giving the actual exam. Goddamn hilarious, eh? XD

Some people don't know what they want to do for a while. Public education doesn't accommodate them nearly as much as it would ideally.

Hopefully you can get good grades in other subjects to make up for your C in mathematics. But grades, I feel, are not as important as most think they are. Are you sure there is no other way to qualify for this college? Personally I wouldn't see it as a loss if you had to go to a slightly less prestigious college Razz

My advisor says that it's likely I can get into the college with the grades I have because I haven't got anything less than a C in my other subjects but I still wanna increase my chances as much as I can to get in. I don't want to go to another college XD This is supposedly the 'best' college in our city and I wanna see what the big deal is XD Plus, most of my friends have applied and will probably get into this particular college. Part of me wants to get into the same college as my friends because I CANNOT MAKE FRIENDS. I do not know the way to act or whatever when talking to someone else. I say what I'm thinking and I cannot acknowledge 'feelings' of the other person. I never understand if the person I am talking to is doing a weird face because they're generally weirded out me or because they have something stuck up their ass or whatever. Honestly, my friends tease me when I meet new people by describing my encounter as some "FBI murder interrogation" XD I ask too many questions to the person and give them barely enough time to answer them XD I can't help it. I just do XD

I'd treasure your friends, then, if you feel you can't make new ones easily. Best of luck with the college thing.

Your behavior shouldn't get you into trouble, but you might want to consider learning more about social mores if you want to find other friends (or other types of friend...)
