RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I just pulled a Rosa Parks
I ended up sitting in a "popular" kids seat at the beginning of study hall. Instead of pulling another chair to their friend's desk, they begged and pleaded for me to "just move over there". I wasn't in any mood to be told what to do so I said no and stayed. Through superficial insults and more pleading, I stayed. The person gave up, and they pulled a chair up to their friend. They're all fine now. So much trouble for nothing.

From the title I figured you resisted authority. Still pretty nice what you did though.
I really wish some of these high schoolers weren't like that. They only hurt themselves, the people around them and ultimately the species with that sort of behavior.

Quite. Indeed, many people believe that they are entitled to things, and public school only makes this illusion more potent...and crippling.

Impressive. Would've thought you resisted authority as well, but this is quite impressive. Took it to their entitlement.

I hope this serves as a message to other people, as the early civil rights dissenters did; a message that there is hope.

Also, are you planning on sitting there again? Or are you planning on doing the same with other tables?

And charge them.
To make things legit, create a deed to the chair. They'll have to buy it, otherwise it's a rental.

I'm sorta glad I don't have to deal with popularity and cliques and stuff like that. But let's say I had to go to high school starting tomorrow and deal with it. Any tips you could give me? What's it like at your school?

I just pulled a Rosa Parks
I remember my father telling me when I was entering the seventh grade: "Only five more years! You're more than half done!" Hmph. It only gets worse with every year.
Thanks for the response, and thanks for letting me know we're still getting new blood every now and then, if these people with double-digit postcounts going around is any indication.

Blend in. On the inside know the evils, the wrongdoing, and the sickness of school. On the outside go incognito.

RE: I just pulled a Rosa Parks
Mercifully, at my old school, if I divorced myself from the world, people acted like I didn't exist.
Returned after years hiatus.

Same thing at my school. If you're on the inside, take caution with the people you hang out with. As long as you're subtle, no one will care.

I have to admit, I like the idea of flying under the radar in high school. Popping my head up to speak out every now and then, maybe submitting provocative work/putting up flyers, but otherwise not attracting much ire. It would be a Herculean task to do that, not fail HS and manage home life, but I still kind of like the idea. Perhaps I actually pulled it off in some alternate universe.
