Math is Fucking Stupid!

I hate math with a passion! Don't get me wrong, some math is useful like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division but that's all I can think of. The stuff that's bullshit is algebra, fractions, geometry, and graphing equations. First of all when the fuck am I gonna use this shit! At least the math that is useful and can be used for real life scenarios like paying bills and taxes. But all the other stuff is only useful if your going to be a rocket scientist or a nerd for the rest of your life. And don't even get me started on that A2+B2=C2 crap! Let me know next time your walking around Wal-Mart and you have to use this sort of math to calculate if you have enough money to buy your stuff. Now I don't know how your school works, but at least my school allows me to use a calculator. This helps a lot but It's still stupid how up your ass the school is about teaching math! If it was just type in 2+2 on your calculator and write down 4 math would be a breeze but no, that's to simple, they make you show your fucking work. But i'll bitch about that some other time. Well if you managed to sit through me ranting congratulations! Thanks for putting up with me and I will see you some other time.

Your not the only one. Me and math don't get along that well especially in school were we learn to memorize bullshit and forget it after the test because there is no use for it. The teacher make it so fucking boring I can't pay attention I just want to fall asleep or simply walkout of the class giving 0 fucks.

Basic arithmetic (which is addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, and order of operations) is most certainly useful.

One can contrive use from basic algebra, geometry (but I don't get why schools take a year to teach two week's worth of theorems), and trigonometry (I love trig).

But advanced algebra and calculus were developed long after the birth of Christ, unlike most of the things I mentioned. And, apart from physics and engineering, they are completely useless and 95% of students don't need to know a single thing about them when they get into the working world. They're not real math at all, and Lewis Carroll (author of Alice and Wonderland) would have agreed with me.

EDIT: And graphing equations are horrible. I want to smack whomever invented them upside the head.

Math is important. However, not everyone needs to learn the complex stuff. Math is the language of science. Many scientists have discovered and created theories simply using math. Einstein used math to prove the Universe was expanding years before it was actually observed and learned that it indeed was. And what did he use? math.

Algebra holds importance in the sense it teaches a unique way of thinking. Algebra has undefined letters mixed in with defined values. This style creates a concept that affects the way we think. I can
say that I use algebraic concepts often in daily life. Not necessarily to do math or science, but logic.

Schools may suck at teaching us the importance of math, but itd be illogical to disregard and despise a source of pure logic. In the end, math is just logic.

I like math. Math is really quite useful in everyday life if you like to use it and you're creative.

I often use at least pre-algebra in my normal life. Like everyday stuff I'll think about. Especially with money.

So far I haven't had much of a need for more advanced math though.

This is exactly my thoughts every day. I have an f in algebra 2, the shit is fucking impossible and the way the teacher teaches it is the most retarded ever. The book is designed to build on each concept but she skips around in it. How am I supposed to pass a class I fucking hate and that is taught so abominably? :/ Seriously though, fuck math.

Math is important, but the way it is taught in your typical public school leaves a bad taste in most students' mouths. This thread is a testament to that. Obviously everyone needs to know the basics, but for more advanced stuff, I think it ought to be on a situational basis depending on what you wish to do with your life.

Also, possible criticism: "waaah math is too hard!" If you can't learn at your own pace, it can very well be.

Math can be useful, but when your in high school, most subjects, like algebra, are pretty useless. At least for the average joe. I don't see why the more advanced practices need to be mandatory, when they aren't that useful to begin with. My current math teacher is one of the worst teacher's I've had period.

If you're going to go after a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) career, you'd do well to at least be able to muster the sort of critical thinking necessary to function in such a position. Students need to have more say and choice in what they study to this end.

And I just found this great article about this very problem. Basically, there are people working to change high-level mathematics (and science) learning for the better with the solutions in my first paragraph and more, and we're all going to need this to happen. For our sake and the world's sake. Save me a spot if you please; I plan to study computer science!

I was the guy for whom it was easy for some reason. Thinking back it was weird because I liked one of my teachers but everyone else said he was terrible. My understanding was that everybody else was actually right and I was just the guy for whom math was easy.

if done well, arguing about sports or soda is still a better use of your time than most algebra.
