RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Total Transformation Radio Ads

Anyone else hear these ads? I've heard some of these ads on the radio. Yes, it's that Total Transformation program.

They're usually about some mothers going on abut how badly they're kids are acting to them and how they pledge never for that to happen to them again, and it goes on to advertise the program. These ads have been playing since May or June (2013).

Total Transformation Radio Ads

They just won't stop! That's actually why I gave up listening to radio entirely, instead relying on copious amounts of Pandora, iHeartRadio, and piracy to get me through this void. Well, it's not the only reason I gave up radio (Bob & Tom Show, anyone?), but it's certainly up there.

RE: Total Transformation Radio Ads

I don't listen to radio much, but I remember last year they were pretty common next to youtube videos.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

I've never heard of this, I had to google it to find out what it is. I guess "transformation" is another word for "Conformity". Most every video about Total Transformation in Youtube, for or against the program, seems to be controversial. I appears that most people, don't like the program. Good.

I heard it sometimes on the radio. I always wondered how they would "transform" the kid. They were funny ads though.

Someone here needs to buy it, and post what it is. Not to the point of piracy, but just enough so that we know if the techniques are good or bad.

A lot of reviews on Amazon from parents say that they feel ripped off. This company is laughing all the way to the bank with the misfortune of parents and kids alike.

Why don't we we make our own product or service and market it?

A lot of parents are frustrated and don't know what to do. Schools don't teach maturity, metacognition, self-awareness, and many other basic life skills, so it's no wonder that many parents end up with kids they can't manage and who can't manage themselves (due to themselves, the kids, or both.)

Can we come up with better answers?

I enjoy playing video games. I don't enjoy videos that are most likely crap. Thus, 7 gigs of crap is not worth the same as 7+ gigs of video game.

Plus, my laptop doesn't have 7 gigs of space at the moment.

Maybe we can collaborate on something. I don't have any experience with children to be of assistance here, but I do know a thing or two about psychology, and I suspect that a few users on here know a lot more than I in the field. We really need to include people who have practical experience with children in to the discussion though.

Whatever we come up with should be released for free and run on a donation based system. Those who appreciate the program and want to support it would donate.

I think it makes sense to make something that can be effectively marketed, including an ad campaign. That requires some kind of revenue source. I agree with making content available for free, but I also think a "solution" for many people requires more than just content.

This is what professionals in the mental health and education fields are for, but obviously something's missing in the equation.

Also, this is closely related to the question of transforming education, in the personal learning sense (as well as the institutional sense.) What do people need to learn? How can they learn it?

Is it a series of lectures, assignments, conversations, or questions?

A lot of times, even if content is free, people don't process or learn from it in the most optimal way. So, I think something more is needed than a bunch of books and DVDs, or web videos.

But those things can be a starting point.

Several people here have talked about writing books and/or are already writing blogs or walls of content. I've also been talking to people elsewhere who are talking about related questions. As part of this ongoing process, I'll link back to this thread from some other conversations.

But, here's one active one (lots of text): https://plus.google.com/u/0/102340336817...Vqm8hkCFhr -- a conversation that followed from Justin Schwamm's share of the Wired article, How a Radical New Teaching Method Could Unleash a Generation of Geniuses

I'm trying to figure out how to get a conversation going about how to build something collaboratively that can finally pull together what a lot of us are saying into a tangible output that we can show to people.

It's hard to show people raw discussion threads, which seem like "walls of text" to outsiders even more than people already involved in a community and conversation.

And arguably, part of what's wrong in many families is that conversation is impossible, and people don't really know how to have them, especially about important questions like, "how do I learn how to improve my life?"

Sherry Turkle has a key talk that hits on this problem of a lack of conversations. She focuses on the role of "texting rather than talking," but I think the issue goes beyond that. There's no room in most factory-model schools to have real, meaningful extended conversations. Likewise, there's no room in many households. Conversations can take on a variety of forms (including forum threads), but often there's just no place for them in people's lives, especially meaningful sequences of "learning conversations."

Hidden stuff:

As at happens, one of the places I've participated in discussions about collaborating on some kind of content, learning platform, consultation service, and the like, is the G+ Conversation community started by John Kellden.

In short, I've found a pretty broad set of people who may be interested in collaborating in different ways, but making something specific that can be promoted remains a challenge.

I can invite anyone who's interested in collaborating on something to a discussion thread, just PM me.

Total Transformation Radio Ads

Promoting an alternative to TT and public schooling sounds doable, but we'd need a silver tongue and clout (and possibly an amount of money).

As for Total Transformation...

"The total transformation product is based on a common sense consistent "tough love" reward and consequence system that can be found in many $10-$15 parenting books. You don't need to spend over $300 for 8 CD's and books! Plus, the program is geared more towards pre-teens and teens, not all children like they claim. They have a very lucrative affiliate program in which they pay very well for every favorable review that generates a purchase. That is why there are so many extreme reviews: either really good or really bad."

"...These people have called my sister three times in the last 24 hrs since she called to inquire about the product. They are getting really aggressive in their sales techniques!..."

"I just don't trust someone who has a past of felonies for theft and drugs like James Lehman does (this info is on his bio on his website). I don't trust a company who doesn't even disclose that the product creator or owner has passed away over a year ago...."

~Alex from amazon.com

"My husband, in the midst of having difficulty with one of our children, ordered this program. What he DIDN'T realize is that the bait and switch fine print stated that our credit card would be charged 49.95 per month for a "parent support line." We are in this now for over $700 as we did not realize that our account continued to be charged. When we called to ask for a refund, there were canned script responses The operator repeatedly stated that my husband had agreed to the monthly charges. My husband has no idea about the parent support line. Also, the feedback survey is 34 pages long...."

~ EE, amazon.com

'Nuff said.

RE: Total Transformation Radio Ads

I don't know what the DVD program is, but I hate to say my dad is reading one of his books, "A New Teenager by Friday". I was curious and started to read myself and it's seriously not all punishment and reward. He actually spends a lot of time telling the parent to change him/herself and that unless the parent takes the initiative to change, the teen won't either. He also reinforces building a relationship between parent and teen. He goes over scenarios like a parent spoiling their kids, a parent being authoritarian, and explains why both are wrong. The best part is that he actually says "it's not about controlling him/her".

Just an inside look. He's not a bad guy in his books, but it seems like he's an insane, shitty salesman.
