RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Opinions on school?

Hey guys I was just wondering what are your opinions on school. Why don't/do you like it, what could be changed, why the public school system was set up in the first place? Just wanting to hear your guys' thoughts.

RE: Opinions on school?

Well, I'll go in to exactly why I hate the schooling system:

1. Being forced to go. If education is my "right", why am I forced to go to a school? Doesn't that kinda kill the "right" in the first place?

2. Being bored as fuck. School is boring. A lot of people say this is a weak argument, but this is actually a strong argument. Why should I go to a place where my brain gets numb and killed by boring stuff I don't care about and likely won't have any relevance in my life?

3. My rights are taken away. You have no Miranda rights in school, for example. I have no freedom of speech, or right to protest. There are constitutional violations that are going on in schools, yet the government says that is an a OK. Don't get me started on zero tolerance.

4. The teachers. The teachers may hate you, the teacher may share ideas that you don't agree with, the teachers may be boring. Why should I let a total stranger teach me? Why can't I teach myself?

5. The work. The work is meaningless, mundane, boring, unlikely to matter later in life, doesn't determine your intelligence in any way, unappealing, I could go on and on. In a nutshell, the work sucks. And you don't get paid for it.

6. When you realize you have to waste 13 years of your life (your entire childhood, basically) in a school building and have no choice in the matter, that just pisses me the fuck off.

7. Being forced with people you don't like. A lot of people in my school are conformist sheep. Not only that, but they act in ways in which I cannot stand them at all. I shouldn't be forced to make "friends", I should make friends by myself!

8. School gives learning a bad name. School makes learning boring, and gives people the idea that learning is bad. Imagine if someone offered you to go through school again. Would you do it? FUCK NO. It was boring as fuck, that's why.

There are so many goddamn reasons why I hate school, I could go on and on and on. I might post later and what could be changed, and I'll look into why the public schooling system was set up in the first place (hint: it was designed to prepare people for a boring and mundane life of being in a factory).

Opinions on school?

I still don't like my high school. Nothing wrong with the school and the teachers weren't bad. My problem was the administration and management(the people who ran the school and the people who owned it). Firstly, there was too much mix between admins and management, which is a terrible idea. You don't want people who run the school part of the group who own the school, since that spells out nothing but corruption.

And that's exactly the problem, corruption. I never trusted the school admins and management because they always behaved suspiciously.

Suspicious accounting and finances.some have more than 1 kid attending, own a house, own multiple cars, run a business and/or something, yet oddly don't pay full tuition or get discount for "financial hardship", while others like my family were being harassed pretty much every month to pay tuition even though we didn't even own a house. How does the rich/capable people get a free pass while we're barely making it? Favoritism maybe? Makes sense since the organization that owns the school is part of some larger movement among the community, and upon careful observation over the years I've seen that those much more in support and connection with the group have gotten more benefits.

Lots of favoritism. I hate schools that only choose certain students to represent the school and just ignore everyone else. I was sort of in the middle of that issue. I was the perfect student to be part of the group who they'd "show off", but during my pre-18 years, I was not as charismatic, social, or too interested in impressing others with my looks. I was more mysteriously bland(though I consider that a facade since I was "flying under the radar" almost subconsciously). So they considered me a substitute whenever they couldn't find anyone else. It also depended on the principal(we had 5 from 5th to 12th).

Didn't get to really know the first dude(5th grade). Then the school moved to a larger building and we had a new guy. He was not bad at first, and he knew me(6th grade) both due to my grades and my involvement in science and math competitions. He ended up sucking later by making a bunch of insanely tyrannical rules(7th grade) like banning facebook OUTSIDE of school, banning going to certain stores OUTSIDE of school and pretty much putting school into our private lives. They transferred him to another high school owned by organization and the third guy came. He knew me for the first bit(8th grade) because I had good grades and still was involved in those science competitions. He practically ignored me later(9th grade) because he was interested in two other kids in my class. No one really liked his style because he was treating the school like the school was in his native country(Turkey) and expected a bunch of absurd things like unconditional respect and standing when he walked into the room. They transfered him to another school(again obviously another school owned by the organization). We got some bald guy(10th grade) who had come over from another school, and his first year nothing really changed since he was probably making his plans. Those plans appeared soon(11th grade) and I decided I really didn't like this dude. He practically ignored any student he didn't consider "worth his time" by the way he acted. The last guy I had was barely ever in the school, though he wasn't that bad(12th grade). He was strict but still had a sense of humour.

So that's a rough draft of my time in that one school from 5th to 12th.

Clarification:My school didn't have much numbers(200-300 students in middle/high school) during my attendance. After my graduation, they bought and moved into a far larger building that pretty much tripled their student count. Our class was often considered one of the best classes in the school compared to the 7 that had graduated before us(the high school portion was added when they moved buildings when I finished 5th and started 6th). Our class was more united as a class, got into less trouble, loved by almost all our teachers, had a good average class grade and did well on our tests. So when I speak of principal ignoring students, I mean our class and the one above us(till we become 12th), since we were considered one of the model classes.

Opinions on school?

I've heard of schools that go as far as banning the use of social networking outside of school. Spying on students is one thing, enforcing laws telling them what to do outside of school is another. That's blatantly unconstitutional.

My school district itself is pretty much shit. The buildings are pretty dingy-looking and the district is quite poor. I remember distinctly during middle school that my school had pretty much ran out of paper (though that had more to do with the budget crisis that California was going through. Thanks, Arnold the Governator). Plus, by 8th grade, we were still using crappy old Macs. However, the school district had enough money to build an entire high school campus for freshmen. Oh, and neither the middle or the high school have a book fair. Pretty broke if you ask me.

RE: Opinions on school?

My school(under the 6-7th grade professor) held an event for parents and taught them the "evils" of social media and how they should delete their kids facebooks(or myspace since it was still alive back then), or at least spy on them. Hell, the school used some students accounts to spy(logging on from the school computers meant they had access to your username and password) on them.

One kid got punished for something he said on facebook. Another had a meeting with principal and parents cause he started a facebook group that was against the school. Everyone who joined was also spoken with. Luckily parents saw the BS in this and the issue was swept under the rug.

RE: Opinions on school?

Things I like at my school:

-I like the teachers. (Well, most of them)
-The lessons are fun.
-The school lunch is good.
-On the last day of school before Christmas, we are watching the Christmas Panto (a.k.a. Teachers' Assembly) where Sixth Formers (Year 12 and Year 13 students) dress up like teachers and perform on stage.

Things I don't like at my school:

-Classmates
-My Pastoral Leader
-When people ride into the school on motorcycles.

RE: Opinions on school?

The Pros Of My School:

Good teachers, they neither hated the administration, or hated the education system.

Good food, this is very, very, very rare across America, especially in Illinois.

Actual hot water, thank God for that.

The Cons Of My School:

Teen pregnancy, the rate there was astronomical.

Awful administration, full of people who think every kid should be perfect.

Idiots are fucking everywhere, must i say more? Rocket

Suicide pandemic every year, oh geezStabhead

Well, that is a rundown of my old school district.
