RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

"I fucking hate being a Teacher."
Quote:First off, I want to make it plain and clear... I LOVE THE KIDS. They are the absolute one thing that keeps me going.
But...
I have taught for 20 years. I am sick of the petty rules. No Gum, you can't read during lunch, no iPods in class, etc. Teachers who hate boys and love girls. Teachers who abuse their power and get good kids into trouble because they have the power to. My co-workers are fucking making these kids lives hell while they are at school. It is no wonder the kids hate coming.
Parents... whatever happened to the day of loving your kids but being firm with them? Today you either ignore them and give them shitty lives, or are pussifying them by doing their homework for them, fighting their fights for them, arguing a grade with me because they told you a lie that they turned in their work, when in reality they have not done any work for weeks.
School boards.... You never have set foot in my classroom, yet you seem to think you know what decisions to make for how I run my class, what is best for the kids in my class and how much I should be paid. All because some idiot union agrees with what you say we should make. Here is an idea, come down to my room, help me out for the day, see what I do. I do some pretty amazing things, but you won't because you are too busy with your full time job to see what I actually do.
I am OK with my pay, I wish I could get a raise, but I am at the end of my pay scale, so there isn't much else I can do unless I take some college classes, so this one is on my shoulders. But, I get paid once a month. I live paycheck to paycheck because of this. I would give anything to get paid every other week.
I am stuck in a room with no windows. I do the same thing day in and day out. The kids have this amazing chance to learn how to do some fun shit. But, instead they rush through everything and slop it together. I would give anything to see their true abilities.
For the past 7 years I have been looking for something else to do. I can only safely look for a new job during the summer months, otherwise I am fined for breaking my contract. People say, oh Teachers can get a job doing almost anything. That is B.S. Experience in the field is what employers are looking for.
This folks, is why I fucking hate being a Teacher.

I want to be a teacher when I grow up. This isn't really helping that goal. But, this is wrong, and someone needs to hunker down and make changes. I feel like if I don't do anything, the school system is going to go be here WAY longer than is should be. That's why I'm going in. I may have my hands tied, but I'll try to make my classroom an example of what school could and should be.

"I fucking hate being a Teacher."
It'd be a bad day for the school I would work at if I ever became a teacher. I seem to have the "revolutionary" trait tied into my genes, so it's likely that if the admins suck at the school, I'd probably overthrow them somehow sooner or later and take over the school.
Course I'm not some ambitious jerk that steps on people, even if I hold my self-interest over others. I believe that loyalty and respect hold that back...till somebody makes the wrong move and the loyalty/respect becomes weaker.
My high school admins were like that. They'd make rules yet never stepped into the classrooms at all, except if they were observing the teacher for some reason. It's like the only time they ever got involved was a bad omen because their involvement meant something bad. We had this one teacher in the school who would always complain about the various things the admins did. He left after a year

RE: "I fucking hate being a Teacher."
I could never be a teacher (even I desired to be one). I'm not assertive enough and I have a very low patience threshold.

I could put the teacher hat on if I had to. It might take a week or a month for me to "accustom" to the role(being an amoeba, I'm able to "shift" into whatever role I consciously wish to adapt to. It takes a bit time, but once it locks in, I'll be pretty damn good at it).
But it's really low on my list of things I'd "accustom" to. So it's pretty unlikely I'd become a teacher(k-12 that is. Professorship is another story).

"I fucking hate being a Teacher."
It seems to me, that the teachers I've had that I liked, all said that they hated school when they were students. One of my friend's mother is a teacher, who hated school, (and still hates it), and she seems to be a favorite among her students.
