RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

and filling it with the best pieces of literature known to this world. I plan on reading every book in my library, and by the end I shall have a lovely bookshelf stacked with enough heavy reading materials to make Teddy Roosevelt cum his pants. here is my list so far:

(key: [ ] = not read [x] = already read)

Fahrenheit 451 [x]
The Catcher in the Rye [ ]
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland [x]
American Psycho [ ]
Animal Farm [x]
The Da Vinci Code [x]
My Autobiography (Chaplin) [x]
Art of War [x] (currently reading)

recommend more for me SS.

This one really isn't a classic or anything, but I would highly recommend The Last Stand of Fox Company.

Both are excellent choices.

If you like Orwell and 451 try "Brave New World" and "The Children Of Men"
"A Clockwork Orange" is Really good too but make sure you get the real version and not the one that had the last chapter cut out.

Edit: holyshit man. You haven't read 1984?

QUITE EXCELLENT READS

Mozart and the Whale
No more lies
We need to talk about Kevin
The power of Critical Thinking
The God Delusion
Of Mice and Men
Hank the Cowdog (series)
Somebody's gotta say it!
Swimsuit
The Origin of Species (Charles Darwin)
The case against homework
The Anarchist Cookbook (A MUST.)

Hidden stuff:
TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

Ender's Game... that's the one with the chess board, right? Haven't read it yet.

Our English teacher spoiled the SHIT out of that book a few days back. We're reading it now. I read it before though, so watching everyone gasp was lulzy as hell.
We're reading out loud, and she doesn't let us read "nigger" Of course, she probably wouldn't care if the person reading was black. Damn political correctness.

Why, what's the last chapter?

Get a collection of Edgar Allen Poe's work.

No, though by the title is sounds like something a second grader would find funny.

Well I don't want to spoil the book but when Burgess (who is english) tried to publish his book in the U.S. the editor at the time decided that people would enjoy the book more if it ended on a sad note. (You have to remember though it was in the 80's and this is the height of the cold war so the publisher war probably right) So it was taken out of the original publishing. Later editions added it back in but that wasn't until an american director made the movie so the movie even leaves out the last chapter.

Oh c'mon, just be careful! Potentially, pretty much everything is dangerous; Shooting firearms, handling kitchen knives, etc.

'Just gotta know whats flammable an shit. I found the collection of homemade bombs quite nice (and useful.) but theres more than just improvised explosives in that book.
