RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I hate school assemblies....

I'm absolutely certain that later this week (or likely in December) the school administrators are going to force everyone out of class so that everyone can "honor" the students that have all the big GPAs over 3.00 and make the rest of us with lower grades feel bad and inferior.

It was in 10th grade when I started hated these assemblies. One, why are they forcing everyone to acknowledge someone else's achievement, especially when it's something so mundane as grades? Why should I give a shit? Do I actually have to know some kid's massive GPA? Second, I can imagine these assemblies causing insecurity and depression. Trust me, I know it bummed me out when they'd parade a bunch of other kids for having great grades but I wasn't on that list. That was when I was a brainwashed pro-school idiot.

Plus, a lot of the kids that receive all these big GPA awards can be quite obnoxious and arrogant. They'll probably see those with low grades as idiots and lazy, even though they're not stupid, they just hate learning institution-style!

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. I hate these types of assemblies. They're just a waste of time anyway.

I hate school assemblies....

I don't go to school on days that we have assemblies (other than the regularly scheduled Monday one, but that isn't so bad) because they are usually like this one. My mummy is so very understanding. Razz

I go to a rather stupid school (accademically, anyway), so there isn't very many people who achieve highly. I was one of these people who achieved highly. I got a merit endorsement on my NCEA (there's not achieved, achieved, merit and excellence). I am pretty sure no-one got an excellence. I wasn't far away from getting one though (only 20 or so credits which are, TBH, pretty easy to get). I know if I actually cared about school that excellence would have been easy to obtain. Anyway back on topic. We had a "prizegiving assembly" where the admins acknowledge those who have done rather good feats or whatever, IDK. Anyway apparently I was supposed to get an award. Didn't show up (it's out of school operating hours). All of the other smart kids were like, "da fuq didn't you show up for, you got something!!1!11ONE". I responded with something like, "I don't give a fuck about an award". They then blurted out crap that made it seem like anyone who does well in school MUST care about it, otherwise why would you bother?! Ugh I hate people. -_-

I'm glad I only have one exam left for the year (tomorrow) and then I don't have to care about it for... 8, 9, 10 weeks? Summer holidays FTW.

RE: I hate school assemblies....

When they are pulling you out of class, just don't go. Basically just start a sit-in in protest of the assembly. It'd probably be better if you notified a news network or 20 about it and tried to get them there, but then you better be prepared with what you're going to say, and even with that you might have to sit outside because I don't know all the laws about news crews going inside a school in session without permission from the principal.

Aside from that you can find out the day and not go.

The less you try to control things, the less you need to.

If you are going to get a bunch of people to do what you want, the traditional tools are force, bribery, or fear. This introduces the corrupting influences of vanity and pride.

School is based on the fraud that teachers teach. The reality is that students learn. Bright students learn more and dim ones less. The assembly like the one you mention is like having an award for being tall. If teachers really taught, why not give them the awards?

If you want to think about something sad, consider the students who work hard trying to get this "pat on the head". They are the ones who are scared having had their vanity stoked up like this.

I recently had an assembly that essentially said you shouldn't post unpopular opinions or controversial stuff on the internet. 1/4 of it was just a guy praising YouTube's new Google+ comment system that makes you jump through hoops to not use your real name. It was....yeah, it sucked.

Agreed. I was the same.

I'd always rather not be "honored" because it's a waste of my time. The question I'd always ask "Am I a Fucking Statue?"...because why the hell do they want me standing up there on stage holding my certificate in hand smiling for the camera(not that I smiled).

There was only one good thing about going up. I once won another award for my grade, and at the time I was sporting an awesome mustache. Needless to say, I was the only one in the history of the school to get up on stage to grab my certificate with an awesome stache...

Another awful thing that annoyed me at my school was the invitation to breakfast for students who got the student of the month award. They'd miss a nice chunk of the first class to go eat breakfast with the admins. I thought that was just wrong. The Che in me suggested starting a revolution Biggrin

I had to be taken out of assemblies because of panic attacks. And I agree, those kinds of assemblies are horrible. At the end of the year, we have one where people go up on stage and get certificates for good work in lessons. Sure, rewards are good and all, but it makes other people feel like nothing.

There are only two/three awards I feel deserve to be acknowledged.

The perfect attendance award. (Yes, you suffered through school every day, but on the other hand you went a whole school year without getting really sick or majorly hurt)

The Honor Roll/A/B Honor Roll. (Whether or not you believe in school, it is pretty tough to keep an A in some classes)

I hate school assemblies....

I usually just fade out and listen to music during assembles. They're usually about raising school spirit, then people usually bring posters and sings to hold up saying what grade their in, or something about loving school. One of my friends suggested we make a sign that high-lights some of the negative side-effects of school.

I could just imagine a pair of students going up on stage with a sign held above their heads, and written on that sign in bold black is "Fuck School".

Teachers mostly bitch about rubbish and keeping the school clean during our weekly assembly. Oh and there's the local sports results. Why we're told them I don't fucking know why.

I hate school assemblies....

Assemblies were a waste of time as well. I honestly couldn't care less(because then I'd be dividing by zero) about who won what award at all. My money sure as hell wasn't being given for standing there(or sitting, depends on how spontaneously the assembly occurred. My high schools admins were not really the best in schedule management since things planned would not happen while things unplanned would just happen).
