RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

You didn't study hard enough! (A rant)

Today was the start of exams. I had to do the IST test, and I don't think I went too well. I mentioned this to my mum when she came to pick me up, and she immediately says 'well you didn't study very hard, did you?'

I don't do well = I didn't study hard enough.

The last thing I want to hear after an exam is a lecture on how it is my fault if I don't do well because I didn't study hard enough. For starters, it just isn't very nice. For seconds, I did study, albeit not as much as some of my friends.

'I'm just trying to make sure you study hard for the exams tomorrow. You always get really upset when you don't do well'

Quite frankly, being told that I don't study hard enough and that it is my fault for doing badly doesn't really motivate me. It just pisses me off, because it sounds like you are telling me that the effort I put in isn't worth anything and I was just being lazy. I wasn't being lazy, I simply got bored of studying algorithms (which were all about math and very confusing) and instead decided to research the aftermath of the nuclear bomb being dropped on Hiroshima.

As far as getting upset over marks, it is the part where everybody judges me by them that upsets me. Probably
because I don't like being told that those other people are all smarter than me because they got 47/50 and I only got 30 or whatever. I'm not going to pretend I'm the smartest person there, but I'm not an idiot, regardless of the marks I get in an exam.

Re: You didn't study hard enough! (A rant)

ahhh but see, the trick is not to "study enough"

the trick is to study right.

and you are right, its not your fault, not by a long shot. hell, some people could study for 24 hours a day a year prior and still flunk because the way they studied did not work for them. You cant be expected to know what ways you should study, yet they expect you to know this.

before i start advice time, let me say that i do not in any way support these ridiculous "tests" nor do i support long hours of studying. but lets be reasonable here, you cant just choose not to study for a test, fail, and then declare yourself smarter than everyone else and say "everyone who did well only did well because they studied, they are actually really stupid"

well guess what? at least those people where smart enough to study. A true intelligent person can find a way to do well on anything, regardless of how trivial it is. does this mean people who cheat on tests are intelligent? of course it fucking does, because they found a way to do well regardless of the situation.

now, lets focus more on your particular case. You studied. thats a really good start, it means you where motivated to succeed. but did you comprehend anything you studied for? did it all go through one ear and out the other? im going to make the assumption that it did. you should try looking at alternative means of studying, such as watching "IST" prep videos on youtube or the like. you should also look into social means of learning. yes, i said social. having friends help you study will help you over 9000 times more than cramming your head full of shit from a book. the people care about you. the book does not. the book hates you. I hate book. book is stupid.

"but Jesusaurisrex! I dont have any friends!" well make some you fag, find someone smart and ask him to help you. unless you are a complete asshole or the kid a complete asshole, he will see no reason why not to. hell, even if your a dumbshit they will probably take you in as their student. true nerds get wet over the fact that they are so smart that they can teach fuckwits. of course, if you already have friends, work with them. even if they are stupid, work together on this shit. your both in the same boat, and misery loves company.

now get out there, study DIFFERENT and EFFICIENTLY next time, and rape your next test up the anus faggot.

Yes that is totally bitchy. It's still a regrettable situation, even if it is your own fault, and your mother should comfort you.

*Claps*

Bravo Jesus I couldn't have done better myself.

Most of my high school year I attest that cheating and scheming did way more than studying ever could have.
