RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Thought this would be a good read to share. I agreed on some parts but I was skeptical on others, like the claim that licensed toys harm creativity, but I doubt that considering that school comes along at roughly the same time as well. Honestly, when I was a kid, I didn't care about a certain role each toy had, I used them and created my own storylines, no matter how nonsensical they were.

I had lots of toy cars, the "hot wheels" kind. And lots of little green soldiers. I also had lots of legos.

My sister hated playing with me. She didn't like the fact I enjoyed creating car accidents and big explosions.

But we'd play with the cars as if they were in a city, and use the soldiers as people. The decorated rug served as the city(box parts as buildings, and the wide single color areas as roads)

Yes. I had wayyyy too many toys as a kid. Now if only my parents would have gotten me violent videogames instead...

RE: Are Children Given Too Many Toys?

I had like no toys.

I had some barbies that i used to "dye" the hair funky colors with markers and some legos and some like.. idk how to explain them they were giant legos.

Mostly i just played outside with my neighbors.
Shit like I used to play Harry Potter.
Or like spies (this was when that show Totally Spies was on)

My favorite toy was that weird mushroom behind my neighbors car that would emit a green smoke when you stepped on it.

My niece has some toys, but she's only 1 and I think that's pretty typical. Besides, she prefers mashing keys on the keyboards and the buttons on the computer monitors. And TV remotes. And cellphones (anything that has a screen she thinks is a touch screen and tries to move things by touching it).
We had her dancing to The rocky horror picture show on halloween
and she dances to slayer and shit.
She even does these mosh pit moves.
It's adorable.

I had violent video games as well. It took a lot of negotiating with my father(my mother didn't really understand ratings) to get rated M games(especially thanks to the Gamestop cashier who would take the money for the game, then explain the rating -_-)

You can imagine the list under the rating of GTA games. But I was able to persuade my father that the ESRB is made up of psycho-conservative parents who think kissing or holding hands are rated NC-17.

Believe it or not, my parents never gave a shit whether I played GTA or not. Been playing it since I was 5. Have not turned into a psychopath (yet?).

I believe I was born eccentric, but all GTA taught me was that mute gangsters can't swim, Lance Vance CAN'T Dance, Grove Street is Green and that Russian mobsters are funny.

Heh, definitely eccentric in my case as well.

Believe it or not, GTA V has taught me more about myself, and human emotions, psychology, and morality, than school ever could. I could go on why about it, but I may or may not create a post about it.

GTA also taught me tanks are invincible and cause cars to blow up when touched by the tank. And that 1 person can somehow operate it completely.

GTA taught me that shooting the moon with a sniper rifle will cause it to change size dramatically.
