RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Check out what I found on the NationStates forums. It's an interesting discussion on the freedom of parents.

I don't wanna say. It's stupid, and my first name is in it. I'm in that thread, actually. So just take a guess and telegram me on there so you can begin to purge me!

Arkotania

^mine. Actually I've been in NS under various names since the about early 2010.(Well,4 total mains. 1st got banned, then I returned as a 2nd, which became the 3rds puppet later on, then my 4th and final with the 2nd and 3rd as it's puppet. There's a 5th, but I use that one rarely so it's another puppet. My puppet nations are usually for poll rigging XD)

I usually explain my nation as a mix of 40k, Star Wars and Halo.(maybe sometimes a drop of Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica here and there)

When does parental authority end? (NationStates thread)

I'm The Remote Islands. Been playing and posting on and off since 2006. My nation's middle-of-the-road right now.

I remember I got in a debate over public school and was defeated by someone who just would not even consider any of my viewpoints. Yeah, I wasn't a great debater, but I even linked him a Gatto book. He dismissed it as 'crazy old man rambling'.

I hope this thread is better.

It went a bit better than that. I cringe at my arguments, though.

When does parental authority end? (NationStates thread)

Some of this shit just makes me angry.

Like this gem of a reply:

Quote:
Quote:
Quote:
Quote:So now what? Gonna let a 6-year-old go off on a spiritual awakening all by his lonesome self?

Please.
Yes.

What's the problem?
I doubt a first-grader has the wherewithal to delve into Nietzsche.

Quote:
Quote:2. I don't follow. How did I criticize those world views, and how is my argument a scarecrow?
Stray man argument. You rely on the flawed assumption that it is essential for children to have an independent 'worldview'-shaping experience.

Wait wait wait.

Let me get something right.

You equate giving your intellectual freedom with thinking that said 6 year old is going to study philosophy by himself.

Then you say someone else has a stra[w] man argument.

Excuse me?

So why does a 6 year old need to "delve into Nietzsche"? Is that some sort of requirement now?

This is not quite as offensive:

Quote:The only thing in life you have dirct control to change is yourself, and you can idnirctly try to change otherhings.

But as a general rule it's the individual that has to conform to the world, the world does not confrom to the individual.

Nevertheless, such demeaning messages calling you to obey and fit into society just because are negative, pessimistic, and have an appreciable "You're a tiny little ant, and I agree with this so I'm telling you that you shouldn't try to change it" vibe to it. Not to mention they'd belong perfectly in the public education system.

Quote:Like my dad told me, you live in my house and eat my food, then you follow my rules.
Would you like an emancipation then?

The child had no choice being made or having to live in this house by your rules. You did and do. Your child is taking up your resources because you wanted one. And if the condom broke, boo hoo, I guess some political/emotional doctrine of yours prevented you from killing off those cells before the brain in charge of them was ever able to feel anything or giving up the baby for adoption. Not your kid's problem. Granted the rest of the post was hardly inflammatory, but when I see this as an excuse for harsh parenting, it grounds my nerves.

Quote:
Quote:
Quote:But they do and will

I'm not denying they are, I'm saying they shouldn't.

Irrelevant

Um, what? Isn't that the entire purpose of debate?

This Yankee Empire guy really seems to believe in brainwashing as a necessity. I don't think my parents brought me up in an ideal manner, but something they did do well was refrain from impressing any sort of religious belief on me personally. (I remember asking what religion we were when I was 8-had no idea-and figuring that Christianity was just a bunch of stories like Aesop's fables when I was 6. They may be, but their purpose, at least, is different.) I think I decided for myself just fine, although it ended up being the lack of position that I maintained all my life before I ever knew what an atheist was.

This guy seems to think different.

Quote:I haven't seen the movie, but parents have a duty to instill religious belief in their children.

Quote:
Quote:
Quote:Your ignorance of actual Christian teachings is amusing.

This is the faith that teaches "love your neighbores" and "treat others as you would like to be treated" as some of its core values.

So you're saying all of what I said isn't true? You don't go to Hell if you are a nonbeliever? God didn't make the world in 6 days, and made man from dirt, and woman from man's rib? Homosexuality isn't a detestable sin, which God destroyed two entire cities for (along with adultery and other vices)?

What you think are Christian values are at best present in fringe groups. Especially the things about hating gays and other groups. "Hate the sin, love the sinner."
Fringe groups?! Well if I haven't heard a big crock of bull.

As for your "'Hate the sin, love the sinner'", you're indicating that you homosexuality IS a detestable sin (which is exactly what the quoted guy said), you just don't hate gays for it. Except for when you tell them they're going to hell, but hey, it's all good!

When does parental authority end? (NationStates thread)

Didn't that German dude from years ago devise a formula to find the total sum of all numbers from 1-100 figure it out as a young kid in school?(Where their dick of a teacher thought it'd be fun to torture her students with uselessly impossible mathematics, then get steamrolled by a kid who did it faster than she probably ever could)

RE: When does parental authority end? (NationStates thread)

Actually, Catholic doctrine states that you have to raise your children Catholic. So that person is kinda right, at least in following his religion.

Imagine having to debate that yankee guy. It was terrible.

I really made a poor choice in my nation name. I want to just say it, so you can comment on how I did, but it'll put my first name in the records on here. So, let's just say that I created the thread, and... Sesame Street.

RE: When does parental authority end? (NationStates thread)

Thread Title Wrote:When does parental authority end?

NOW. *Pulls out remote control with a single red button on it*

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.
