RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

New guy here, studying for his GED

Hi, I'm Paul, and I'm a high school dropout. I'm 18-years-old and dropped out in tenth-grade for many reasons: severe social anxiety, anxiety in general (I'm autistic, if it matters), manic depression, and family problems being the primary reasons for dropping out of school. I've been trying to motivate myself and get this GED so I can go to college, but it's so hard. :( I have no support system whatsoever.

If it matters, I took the Official Practice Tests and scored the following: a 420 in Science, a 510 in Social Studies, and a 480 in Language Arts, Reading. It seems as if everything I have taken so far is reading comprehension. Lol. I have yet to take the Mathematics portion of the Official Practice Test.

Here's my biggest problem: I don't know what to study for on the Mathematics portion of the test. The teacher, he randomly throws me assignments (math) that I don't even know how to do. He is not telling me what I should learn in order (I have OCD as well, so it kind of makes it difficult here). I would say I am at a seventh-grade level when it comes to math, honestly.

Anyway, what kind of math can I study in order to pass the Mathematics part of the test before the end of the year? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

RE: New guy here, studying for his GED

Hi, and welcome.

I dropped out of high school in 11th grade. Fortunately, I was able to pass the GED without studying.

It sounds like you're close except for math.

Are you familiar with Khan Academy? They have a wide range of math and science videos, starting from the absolute basics through college level. A lot of people find them useful.

What do you want to study in college, and what are your plans after that, for career, work, etc.?

What are your interests?

This is a good place for support, if you can stand a bit of wackiness, and some long walls of text, on occasion. Smile

Hi, thank you!

Yes, I am familiar with/have considered Khan Academy. However, I do not do too well self-studying when it comes to math.

I don't know, honestly. My interests mostly consist of the Japanese language, culture (media), history, and psychology; video games, anime, manga, and mathematics (surprisingly, math fascinates me); politics, geography, meteorology, and oceanography. I have a LOT, I MEAN A LOT OF interest. I have too many that I don't even know where to start.

That's good! It's great to know. I love to read long posts, honestly.

RE: New guy here, studying for his GED

Wow, that's a lot of interests. I have a lot too, with a lot of overlap there.

It's sad that school can't do a better job of adapting to a wide range of interests.

You might find some relevant posts on Puttylike. Emily there coined the term "multipotentialite" to describe people, like herself, who have a lot of different interests.

I need to put together a site like that with some of my links and references... but for now it's mostly buried in posts.

Check out Degreed and Accredible, two sites that help people track their personal learning (in or out of school.) The idea is that by tracking a range of learning, people can demonstrate that learning to potential employers, clients, or anyone else... instead of being dependent on traditional degrees and credentials.

Regarding how to learn math... what about tutoring, some kind of accountability group, or working with a coach? What methods do you think might work?

A lot of interest huh?

What about the cosmos, god, war, anatomy, human behavior, the art of manipulation, weapons design, nuclear science, material science, physics, electricity, french, the classics(ancient Greek/Latin) and philosophy?

Though so...

By the way, Welcome. And I too enjoy everything due to the way I've restructured my human nature. Now I'm so modular, I just have to think it to want it and it always fits(also sort of why I have almost nothing I hate. ALMOST nothing. Some things here and there, but some can be "re-arranged" as well)

RE: New guy here, studying for his GED

Looks like we're kind of in the same boat. I also dropped out, just this year actually. For pretty much similar reasons. And I'm scheduled to take the GED in December.

Somebody already mentions khanacademy. I made an account. Having an actual account on it is really nice. It keeps track of what you do, and how far you are with it.

also http://freerice.com has math. I guess it's mostly known for vocabulary words. But it also has some really simple math along with a few other subjects.

http://www.passged.com/homeroom/free-ged...e-test.php practice test

http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0809222329/ Some math thing that i didn't do but probably useful to help you figure out where you have issues.

The practice tests are nice if you want to figure out the math, helps you figure out what exactly you need to do, then you can go onto khanacademy and look up their video for it and do their things and practice that.

I got all those links btw from the website for the little school thing i'm going to (some adult education place that has GED courses, I assume you're doing something similar from your post) If you want I can give you the link to all the websites they have listed. I'm a bit lazy. But not crazy enough to post the link which has the address of the place in it >.>
They got a few helpful things Smile
