RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Painfully Short Lunches, Painfully Long Days

Does anyone else have issues at their school where the lunch or lunches are too short? At my school, our lunches are 20 minutes. Last year, they were 25 minutes each (3 lunches) and the school day ran from 7:45 am to 2:09 pm. Also, upperclassmen got priority. The seniors and juniors had first lunch, depending on which week they were on, and the sophomores and freshmen had second lunch. Shops had third lunch. (It's a technical/vocational school)
This year, our schedule was changed. The day runs from 7:43 to 2:20, and the lunches are 20 minutes each. And freshmen and sophomores get priority. They get first lunch, shops get second lunch, and juniors and seniors get last lunch.
Also, having a shorter lunch means it's harder to GET lunch. On average, it's a 10 minute wait in the lunch line, but often more. Being seniors, we're taking this pretty hard. Even though the lunches are 20 minutes, third lunch doesn't start until an HOUR after first lunch starts. So generally, by the time we're sitting down to lunch, the food is cold and/or stale, and the culinary students who prepared it, as well as their instructors, are pissy, moody, grumpy, tired, frazzled, fried, etc.
Pardon that rant, but I'm wondering if anything along these lines happens anywhere else, or if my school is just THAT ridiculously uncaring.

P.S. One way or the other, the school doesn't really care about us. Multiple teachers have mentioned that our superintendent looks at us/it as "butts in a seat are money in his pocket."

RE: Painfully Short Lunches, Painfully Long Days

Jesus, that's ridiculous. The shortest lunch break I've seen in the working world is half an hour. Twenty minutes is barely enough if you don't have to actually go anywhere for lunch. Supposing everything is optimal and you eat in the break room right near your desk, you can eat in twenty minutes. Supposing you have to go somewhere nearby or wait for something to cook in the microwave, you'll need the half hour. I never bid for the schedules with half-hour lunches; I always needed the full hour to decompress and get my shit taken care of.

Twenty minutes is absolutely absurd from what I remember of how long it took to get through the lunch line -- because of course they start counting when you leave the class before lunch, not when you sit down or anything.

Suggested actions:

- Write an anonymous letter to school administration

- Bring your own lunch

Is that last thing not allowed?

Do it anyway and fuck them

RE: Painfully Short Lunches, Painfully Long Days

We had a written petition being signed against the lunches two weeks ago. (our previous academic week) I haven't heard nor seen anything about it since then. Chances are pretty good that the administration tossed the petition. They do the exact same thing with incident reports regarding bullying.
We have to go from various wings of the school, down to the lower floor. However, managing such is a task in and of itself because the stairways down to the lobby (where the stairwell to the lower floor is) are jam-packed and then the stairway from said lobby down to said floor is narrow and impossibly tight and awkward at lunch, during class changes, etc. It's generally a 2-3 minute ordeal just to get from one's class to the cafetorium. So already, upon reaching the lunchroom, you're down to 17, maybe 18 minutes.

Well, where I was, school lunches were 30 minutes in length, though incredibly stale, and full of preservatives, and artificial additives. The Tyson chickenburgers in particular, were absolutely lethal if consumed long enough. The fact that the chicken was flat and had no bones in it, raises my suspicions that either the meat was grown in vitro, or the final product was nothing resembling the original, poorly-raised chicken. But enough of a rant from me.

If you want me to, I'll send an email to the administration of the vocational school, playing the role of a concerned parent, to at least shed some light on the reasoning behind the policies. Maybe I'll do nothing. Or maybe I'll just redditbomb the damned thing. It's your call.

Lunch time at my school may be the only thing that's good about my school (not the food, just the time of it). It's roughly 50 minutes long, actually.

You're right, they don't care about YOU. But they care about others. If you want to be effective, and become their worst fear, you need to organize. No questions about it. You also need support from critical members of the adult community, and also to have very structured party lines. I know I may be sounding like a how-to manual for a dictator right now, but it's all true. Just a thought.

Good for you. My school had painfully short lunch times and the list of things you were allowed to do in there was RIDICULOUS. Hell, I could've asked one of the girls for oral sex and no one would've batted an eye. But bring any literature whatsoever, and I mean ANY, they will hound you like there is no tomorrow.

Just enjoy your lunch and tell anyone who bothers you to fuck off. Use those very words.

I often read books a lot during my breaks and free time. I'd carry it around. Anyone bother me about it and I'd give them my death stare(being a stoic who thinks he's an emotionless robot really has its perks sometimes). Even those who wanted to continue would soon find my penetrating cold stare and lack of movement or voice disconcerting.

Usually nobody ever got to my next phase, which would involve a growl before I begin to strangle them with my bare hands(I find strangling to be fun in a way. Not that I'd strangle random people, but If I was getting mugged or something, I'd fight back and break bones/fingers then proceed to strangle. Not kill though. Strangling just works real well when you want to scare people shitless)

That was back then. And if my brother tried any of that, they'd taser him. I don't have lunch now. I just eat whenever I damn well please, not constrained by time and money.

I eat fast. I only need about ten minutes, and I can probably do it in less.

My school gives me thirty, so no complaints there. I just wish they had better food.

Wow. My school's lunch was 45 minutes. We'd spend about 20-ish minutes getting lunch ready and eating, then whatever time remained was used in playing soccer or volleyball or just chilling and talking(or doing homework).

So when I look at your lunch breaks, mine seems heavenly Smile
(It was even enough time to get home for lunch, then get back to school before class. I lived about 3 blocks away from school, a 5-minute walk, and as a senior in high school we could leave for lunch)

Are you serious? I get 40 minute lunches and always have! I usually spend the 40 mins just talking. I'd be so stressed with a 20 min lunch.

RE: Painfully Short Lunches, Painfully Long Days

Only time we had a short lunch was when my school administered lunch detention. Gave us only 10 mins to eat(which was last 10 of 45 min lunch).

It was so controversial, they stopped after a year.

I have lunch for a half an hour. It feels short though because I have to wait in the line for so long. Usually I talk during lunch but at the end the adults try to quiet us down(Usually some kids still talk and the adult makes a comment).

Teachers never bothered our lunches. The cafeteria during lunch was a chorus of voices.
