RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I miss the old days

Right now its 2 in the morning. I have school in 4 hours. I can't sleep. And all I can think about is 7th grade. I miss it so much. Its when I used to have so many friends and hang out all the time and do stuff. Practically every day we would just hang out and do fun stupid shit and now I dont talk to half those people and it just sucks that now I barely do anything. It is junior year right now and I feel like that phase in my life is over where its just life from now on , no more partying or having fun, Does it get better? Does next summer get better from anyones experiance? Sorry if this might make no sense im kind of ripped and overtired

I'll take it you're in the 9th grade. Well, I don't know whether it gets better within school, but I can ASSURE you it gets infinitely better outside of school. Of course, my 7th grade was a disaster, so that might be a coloring of bias by me, but still, IT DOES GET BETTER. Thank you Marauder, it feels good to give others encouragement after that trainwreck of a suicide attempt by my brother earlier.

I miss the old days

You do realize that the k-12 period only encompasses a very small portion of your entire social life?

It's when you become a legal adult(and usually go to college, as it tends to be the environment for socializing most of the time), will you really have the greatest fun.

So the old days will not really be great when you get to the days to come.

This.

If you can realize you are looking at your youth through the rose colored lenses of nostalgia you will see that legal adulthood is the best for socializing. So yes it will get better.

Different things happen to different people.

In my case, 90% of school sucked horribly compared to the awesome people I met outside of it.

Keeping in touch is worth the effort, though. Maybe you can still hang out with these people?

RE: I miss the old days

It does get better. And it's not just college or "legal adulthood" that makes it better. You can take steps now to improve your life.

A good part of it is about finding and connecting with people and/or activities that you enjoy. The Internet opens up so many opportunities to do both things... even if it can be a lot to navigate. And, beyond the Internet, there's the world itself. Smile

In addition to ways to party and have fun, what are your interests? What do you like to do? There are lots of ways to have fun when you're doing things that matter to you, and developing parts of yourself that matter to you. School often crushes those out of people... so it can take some work to recover and discover who you are, beyond what you're currently experiencing.

This TEDx talk from John Green (author, YouTuber) uses maps as a metaphor for figuring out life, and finding your way to the communities that are out there, if you can find ways to navigate to them. For him, YouTube was a big catalyst for connecting and learning with others. That's just one of many, but the basic concept is relevant to life in general... there's more out there, and more to be built, than what's on your current map of life.

Watch on YouTube

But, nothing magically happens at "legal adulthood" -- or even, necessarily, "in college." For me, I've had to look far beyond both of those things.. even with a decent outline (I thought) of what life can consist of. There's really so much more to discover. And I'm still discovering it... the key is not to stagnate, even if it's hard not to when you're drained by the life you're living.

So, what are the steps to take? It depends in part on who you are and where you are... but keep asking the questions, and maybe we can all figure out how to do life better than the way it's usually presented to us.

Indeed, it's what others said. Your best days are ahead of you. The fact that things might seem bleak now just means that once you survive through it, there'll be a lot of opportunities on the other side.

I'll pretty much say what everyone else says: school's not the only place to meet people, and eventually, you'll get out of there. You'll be free eventually.

I miss the old days

I miss the simple times, where i was never yelled at, or judged for my opinions, and no one thought im stupid, but those times are gone, no im an asshole 24/7 because no one will just let me be, my parents are PRO school retards who just dont get anything, i go through periods of depression frequently,

one thing i notices about school is, even though im usually depress a lot, my few friends at school ALWAYS cheer me up, yea its boring, but my friends rock and i always laugh and have a good time with em

School isnt as bad as you think

What I mean by "legal adulthood" was not something magical but simply you are given freedom. Most of that freedom should have been given to you at like age 8 but whatever.

I've seen you've made a lot of posts about "legal adulthood."
As long as that doesn't mean you think alcohol is great for socializing (It isn't.)

No I mean free association. Not being forced in age segregated classes, being allowed to associate with who you want and avoiding who you want. Alcohol is a different topic.
