RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I feel really shat on now

So... I thought about all these great and useful tips that were listed in the School Survival main website, and I wanted to talk a little with my younger brother (He is 14 years old). What generally gets on my nerves is that he always rubs this "Exams" "Learning" and "Homework" shit under my nose, not directly but he is determined in doing this shit and always tells me about how important it is.
Now, he is not a bad person in general, this shit just really gets on my nerves.
I just hate being reminded of something I do not want to destroy my head with. So I had a little talk with him (About a few minutes ago Confused) and I just wanted to calm him down a little, that he should not destroy his head with that.
I used some of those tips in this website and told him that there is always an opportunity for everything and that it is the best thing when people can go their own way to their goal. In the end I even told him about those "10 Benefits of Homework". I really thought I would have convinced him atleast a little, but all of that dropped completely.
He responded with something like "But homework is important for you to learn something, life is not a paradise!"...

I fucking cringed, this is pretty much like when you want to repair your computer from a crash or something, you almost get done with it, and then all of it gets fucked up.

Ok, I do not expect people to listen to everything I say, but I atleast appreciate a little pat on the back or something like that. I felt really... how would I say... "shat on".
Almost the same thing happened when I talked to my mother about what I think of this school system, and she was really proud of how advanced I can state my opinions, and the next weeks after that are again just like... "This year will count everything for you, or you will not get a good job"

...And then they (And many, MANY people that I ALSO tried to convince a little) complain about why I do not want to talk with them Noo

I think it is the better way to just leave them doing their thing, I can not achieve anything anyway from that, but I really do not immediately want to start a rebellion, I just wanted to technically "calm them down" from this school stress. Ok real talk, what the fuck am I doing wrong?

RE: I feel really shat on now

Life is a paradise. Its just that the poor obedient slaves are locked up in their caves while the actually enlightened ones are stretched out at the beach enjoying the breeze and scantly clad women and whatever theyre drinking.

My general hypothesis is that if they concentrate too much on the work without thinking about it, youll just become another employee in a sea of employees while the executives go play their golf under the guise of a business trip.

Perhaps you just need to wait. People aren't going to change their ideas overnight. Wait a month or so, he might see the light. I know that around that age, I acted like an arrogant-as-hell snob with my grades, but after sophomore year (which sucked), I pretty much started hating school, and then I found this site, and well.... I'm an avid hater of school.

Some people will just stress and freak out no matter what you do. I think trying to convince them of anything just makes them stress even more. I guess just try to chill yourself as much as possible, and maybe it'll rub off on them a bit.

I feel really shat on now

It took me 5 months to turn my friend into a die-hard libertarian with a powerful interest in economics and politics.

Though one can say all I did was bring out what he really wanted. It's fascinating really, how people will really not know themselves. Course using socratic questioning did help(and we all know someone here who often uses questioning...and walls of text *wink*)
