RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

FuckTheSystem here...
Well, crap. It's been quite a few years since I was on these forums. I graduated from independent study last year, and after I got put in Independent Study, i felt like i didn't need this site anymore.
But I forgot what a great site it is and how much information is here, and all the users are pretty nice, at least in my past experience. So, I decided to come back, maybe to inspire or help those who are struggling with the same issues I was up until about 4 and a half years ago.
I guess my experiences and the thoughts of those experiences got rehashed, so to speak when I made plans to attend college in February. I don't think it's gonna happen, but, long story short, I gotta tell everybody it is going to happen in order to get prescribed my Adderall again, which I've been without for a year. It is the reason I passed me exit exams in April of 2012. Did it two days, within two hours each day, and ended up passing, and it was all thanks to Addy. Shit, I didn't study or anything.
Anyways, maybe some of you will remember me. But if not, Hey, it's Steven, heh.

RE: FuckTheSystem here...
Welcome back!
I started posting here when I was last in college... before I dropped out. There's a lot more overlap between issues in secondary school and college than may be obvious. I think there are better ways to do learning.
I've been here on and off over the years, but lately I've been posting here a lot. Changing education, and people's experience of learning and making sense of life, is really a life goal for me. It's a tough problem, but a lot has been changing over the past few years. There's still a big disconnect for a lot of people, though.
What are your plans now? What might you do in college? (There are a lot of alternative ways to learn, now, in case you're not aware... Saying No To College.
I'm working to build a new kind of learning environment with all the content I've collected (and continue to collect.) Fortunately, a lot of educators are on board with this, but it still seems rare for conversations between unhappy students and people in their lives to work out.
