RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Sexual Harassment?

Okay, so there are these two girls in my theater class who are about four years older than me and they, for some reason, like to do things to me. They know that I hate to be touched or talked to in a sexual way, but they constantly approach me and kiss my face or run their hands down my legs and face. They stare at me, hit my ass, lick their lips as I walk by, and they say sexual things to me. I am very introverted, but I have been begging them to stop. I finally plucked up the courage to consult my teacher when their names came up in a conversation. The teacher just said, "I wouldn't like that either." and left it at that. It is getting to the point where I can't handle being by them and I dread going to the class. This mixed with the regular harassment I get with people hitting me or kicking me in this class is just not good. My question is, how would I go about reporting this, how much trouble could the teacher and students get in, and how much trouble could I get in if they turn the tables on me?

Report their asses to the office. Snitching for minor things usually isn't a good idea, and we hate that too, but it seems that this has gone far too much. If the school is somehow incompetent in handling this (which wouldn't surprise me), then don't be afraid to tell them off in an aggressive way, perhaps threaten them. Don't mind if you get suspended, if you have competent-enough parents, they'll definitely understand.

Sexual Harassment?

That's a tough situation. Why are people so disrespectful at your school?

You might want to document the problem somehow. Is there someone trustworthy like a principal or counselor around?

I think the goal is to get them to stop, and hopefully learn a lesson about respect. That doesn't necessarily involve "punishment." Typically, when people are "punished" in schools, I don't think they learn a lesson... it's all part of the twisted game of school.

Maybe ask them how they'd like someone picking on them and violating their personal space. Talk to someone, at least. You might consider writing a letter or list of what's been going on. Too many people suffer from bullying and harassment.

Is this something you think you're alone in facing, or are others dealing with these problems as well... from those two, or the others?

Is that the only class where you have problems?

To answer your questions, the teacher probably wouldn't get in trouble. I don't know what would happen, exactly. If you document the problem well, explain when it started, what you've done to try to stop it, and how it's causing you distress, and go to the principal or school counselor or someone like that, they should be able to do something.

Are there others who can corroborate what's happening, if need be?

RE: Sexual Harassment?

The thing is that I have talked to the teacher and she did absolutely nothing. I am afraid to speak to the office because, if these students get in trouble, then I get in trouble with the theater teacher because they will get kicked out of the plays. Everyone will hate me then. My parents are going to speak to the teacher and the office, but I have a feeling that these girls won't stop. No, Dead, they aren't exactly ugly, but as a straight girl it is extremely uncomfortable to have other girls slapping my ass and kissing me.

RE: Sexual Harassment?

The right solution, as they may say, is to report them.

My logic based solution? Usually involves pain, humiliation and something akin to war.(probably not suitable for you. Im just crazy...)

Start with your parents. Teachers can be unreliable, thouh there may be a teacher who is serious about helping students(had a teacher in high school who was trusted by almost every student to talk to about their problems. I never met with her since I either dont have problems, or solve my problems myself through deceit and manipulation and strategy). Plus parents can put weight on school admins to actually bother doing something(on the pain of pain, if I was a parent).

Yeah, talk to your parents. You might also try going to your teacher again, and explain in more clear terms that this is really disturbing, and you shouldn't have to take it, and explain that if she can't help you resolve the problem, you'll have to escalate it.

Or, write a letter that explains everything, make a copy, and run it past your teacher. Explain you can't and won't put up with this any longer, and ask how she can help you end it in more forceful terms.

Putting things in writing will make it seem more formal. Just emphasize that you want the behavior to stop, completely, rather than getting them punished... but you don't know what else to do.

RE: Sexual Harassment?

My parents are going to the school this week or the next and are going to to to the teacher and the administrators about it and they are getting me switched out of the class at semester due to other physical abuse going on in the class, but this teacher manipulates other students to make your life living hell if you get someone in the class in trouble or if you switch out of the class. I still have a feeling that these girls won't stop whether or not I reported them and the school administrators don't take reports very seriously.

Yeah, exactly, Dead. Try starting a campaign against all of that. Is there anyone in your school who understands that's really bad and not something to tolerate in the school?

It's really sad that so many people are incapable of respecting others. This is one of those lessons that needs to be part of education... for real, not just lip service.

Can you start a general campaign against that kind of behavior? I mean... as an introvert I'd find it hard to think about doing that, but it's one way to address the problem without singling out one person. Are other students dealing with that kind of bullying and harassment there?

RE: Sexual Harassment?

I don't think that any other kids who are being harassed are going to be willing to take a stand. I think a campaign is a great idea, but the school already has some similar campaigns going (they are pretty bad campaigns). They will find it either unnecessary or will just make us sit through another assembly about someone who died who was against the behavior or something. Plus, you have to have at least seven other people willing to be apart of the campaign (which they will consider a club) in order for it to be enforced on campus, and I know nobody will be willing to help me.

I have talked with my parents and they are going to head down to the school and fix the problem. Thank you guys for your help.

Then nearly crush their fingers as a demonstration.

I love the fingers. So useful yet also so easy to damage. They're one of my main targets whenever I get into a fight(which rarely happens, but I'm always ready). Index finger and thumb would be specific ones, then the pinky the third choice.

I think it was especially ironic because one of them is rumored to have sex with everyone and the one is a Mormon. I was being sexually harassed by a Mormon Huh .
