To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Learning 2030: Disengaged and Excluded

Another live event episode from Canadian TV. This features a panel of adult experts who all take issue with school-as-usual, in a talk show format, with interspersed clips from students who don't like school.

I highly recommend you all take the time to watch this. I read a lot on these forums about how adults don't respect youth. In reality, there are a lot out there who do, and who remember being young, and who are working to change things. I'm one of them. And... over the past few years, it seems like it's become mainstream for all kinds of people to realize that "19th and 20th century" factory model education needs a total remake in a "screen-based," information-saturated world.

Hidden stuff:

The key takeaway here is... many people are disengaged from school, including for good reasons, and many people questioning school-as-usual, and looking to build better ways of learning, that it may first appear. Finding the pieces, and then engaging with them after living with "who would question school?" mindsets, takes a shift in perspective, as DoA wrote about in School and the Allegory of the Cave.

If school isn't a good source of learning, and the internet is saturated with information and perspectives... then it's up to individual learners... and whoever can manage to put the chaos into some kind of comprehensible format... to make the change. Another of the Learning 2030 episodes featured learners who were taking charge of their education. The missing piece is the scenes where people actively trying to figure out what to do use these pieces to figure out what might be possible.

How might these conversations go from this format... to one that actually involves learning conversations with parents, educators, and students about how to learn, and "see" learning, in new ways?
