RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

My story

This is a throwaway account, aka not any real usernames. I just want people to hear me out.

Last year, my friend would act really annoying in class. I decided to follow in his footsteps like the idiot I am, and made lots of really nice people hate me. One in particular, let's call him Dereck. I thought he was a really cool guy and everything, but I fucked up and he didn't like me.

So I go to the new grade this year, and I go to Spanish and I really like this one girl. She has a great personality and she's extremely nice. So I find out she has a boyfriend, I say "whatever" and then find out.

Her boyfriend is Dereck.

I just wonder in disbelief. How? What are the chances of this happening...

Today, i'm in 2nd period. Dereck is in my 2nd period, and I've tried to become friends with him since the start of the year after I annoyed him like an idiot all last year. Today, the teacher calls on me and asks me to answer a question. Dead silence. Dead fucking silence. I stutter, and it happens at the worst times. I can be talking to friends and just have to come up with a random word or something, but today the entire class stares at me. For about 45 seconds. Everybody is looking at me, and i'm like "holy shit, this is the end". After the teacher asking multiple times over and over, I finally blurted it out. People next to me started at me and just looked at me. I couldn't talk to anyone in that class for the rest of the day. I probably won't be able to for weeks. After that moment, I just couldn't do anything throughout the day but think about what happened. How can this happen to me?

That's my rant.

RE: My story

Well... Shit happens. I'm really sorry, I just don't know what else to say. Sometimes things fucking rock, sometimes they fucking suck, that's how,the dice rolls.

My story

They'll forget. Average screw ups(the action, not the person) are often forgotten pretty easily. I can recall countless times I screwed up somehow, but it never really affected my overall reputation of being a walking encyclopedia bent on world domination. You are more likely to shame yourself then you are shamed by others(and likely to project this feeling onto others. It's like turning the audience into mirrors and thinking what you feel is reflected off them, when in fact they could really careless)

You don't seem to elaborate on the girlfriend issue. Is it a problem or are you stating something you consider a coincidence? Freud I senses something more.

RE: My story

You gotta take the hits and roll with them. You joke about any mess ups you have, confidently declare you will learn from them, and it is much more attractive.

My story

They'll forget eventually. I think most people kinda understand what it's like to be nervous and freeze up sometimes. Unless your class is full of jerks... in which case, good luck.
