Depends how long it lasts. Do you collect welfare? Do you need a loan? Do you need a passport? Down the line, more and more will come to a halt. Still, im more worried about the debt ceiling debate coming up. Now that could be catostrophic lol. Economically, as it were.

How our Congress is fine with this is beyond me:

-Research into life-threatening diseases and other areas will stop, and new patients won’t be accepted into clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health.

-Permits and reviews for planned energy and transportations projects will stop, preventing companies from working on these projects. Loans to rural communities will be halted.

-Hundreds of thousands of Federal employees including many charged with protecting us from terrorist threats, defending our borders, inspecting our food, and keeping our skies safe will work without pay until the shutdown ends.(So far all that patriotic machoism, the shutdown will affect national security? I guess it's time we arrest Congress for their threat to national security. Oh wait, when it comes to them, there's a bunch of exceptions)

No. This is not the "government shutdown" you want.

I was half-joking; I was saying I hoped the fed would completely stop. Right now the difference is that they're causing a backup in work they'll do anyway, and cost taxpayer $.

In a better world, states would provide most of the services the fed provides, and if a bad law is ratified (coughObamacarecough) people could move to a better state while remaining U.S. citizens.

Everyone must have healthcare by the end of 2014 I believe? Or else you'll get taxed. Some cities have put an obesity tax, also.

In reality that part is no different than states forcing people to buy car insurance.

As for the government shutdown, yes, things that are fully government run would just stop, like national parks, etc, and others (like security) would be forced to work without pay. It's definitely not cool like you might think.

Another absurd thing is how Congress and the White House thinks they deserve their pay. All their earnings from their political career should be taken back from their personal funds and used to cover at least some funds. Americans don't pay their taxes so these idiots can create this problem, and still get paid for it. Soldiers will be given IOUs due to funding cuts, and they're the one's physically defending this country, but the politicians who only care about their own party agenda and are tearing things apart, expect their paychecks on time. o_o

She was crying that she was living by "paycheck to paycheck like most Americans" when in reality she owns multiple homes. Not our freakin' faults. It's really sickening that people like Linda Sanchez are making a shitload of money yet the people that are being affected by the government shutdown (like soldiers) aren't making any money because of it. It really is.

And these politicians really have no need for a government paycheck when their own personal paychecks from their individual business involvements rake in millions. And supposedly according to her, most senators and representatives are not millionaires.

While only 1% of Americans are millionaires, nearly half of Congress(47%) are millionaires. Is that "quite a few"? Plus, isn't it likely the reason she lives paycheck to paycheck have to do with her spending beyond her own personal wealth, thus using the government salary to supplement? I could be making a million dollars a year, and spending a million-and-one, with two from my government salary. Thus, I'd technically be living paycheck to paycheck because I'm spending so much.
