RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Can you please check your history books and show me exactly what it says about the 2nd amendment? Like. Go to the "Bill of Rights" section and tell me what is written under the 2nd amendment and let me know if the 2nd amendment has any footnotes and what those footnotes say. Or you could just take a picture of the page and post it here.

I appreciate it in advance, thanks a lot.

Hmm, okay, I'll try to!

Edit - I found it. Here ya go...

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

"No matter what I do, it'll probably forever remain a pipe dream that will never come true,
but the fire burning in my heart cannot be doused by anyone.
Even if the black rain falling from the sky drenches me completely and doesn't stop,
I will never allow the fire in my heart to be extinguished. That, is my 'pride'."

I think lots of people miss parts of this amendment. They either think its outdated or has to do with the right to own a weapon to hunt for food...

Have an American Govt book here somewhere, but I believe the above post covers it(Its a pretty short and simple amendment, most likely because the founding fathers overestimated our intelligence).

RE: I need a favor from all of you in school!

Thanks so far.

I asked this because certain textbooks have literally edited the amendment to make it sound like it isn't an individual right (or added a footnote "explaining" why it isn't). I just wanted to see how prevalent it was.

I haven't seen any such editing or footnotes in any of the books I came across that had the US constitution in it. My high school US history textbook had explanations for parts of the constitution, but they didn't really contradict or downplay the 2nd amendment. Seeing that it's such a short and quite blunt statement, there shouldn't be a real need to define it or explain it(though learning why it was put into the constitution as part of bill of rights would be nice. The whole "protecting liberty by arming citizens in case of tyranny" sort of thing).

Editing or footnotes like that are just despicable. How academia can seriously tolerate such blatant "politicization" of education has always troubled me. Another downfall of the education system and academia.

(Clarification:I have no qualms of using education to promote political thought, but the purposeful smudging of facts for political gain I despise. I'm also not a large fan of political parties. They shouldn't even exist. I guess you can say I'm socially nationalistic, believing a nation should not be so fragmented as to stoop so low as insults and lies just to promote their own party and advance their own agenda. As Lincoln said, "government of the people, by the people, for the people...")

After all, the founders knew that since they founded their nation by overthrowing their government, the time might come where they would have to do it again.
"What country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of
resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure." --Thomas Jefferson

"When will the world listen to reason? I have a feeling it'll be a long time." --Dexter Holland

"Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have. The course of history shows as government grows, liberty decreases. " --Thomas Jefferson

According to the index the term "bill of rights" only appears on one page and I can't actually find it there -_-

But it's one of those shitty "big picture" textbooks that thinks that "women" is an adjective and sounds like it was written by robots.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

The 2nd amendment is invalid because they only had single-shot muskets that took half a minute to reload back then, just like how we shouldn't have free press because there were only newspapers in that era!

Pepperbox revolvers hadn't really come into widespread usage at the time. The highest capacity firearm you were likely to find was a flintlock pistol with multiple, non-rotating barrels.

It shouldn't have surprised anyone however. It was basically every military minds wish for someone to come up with a weapon that'd fire at least more than once without having to reload each shot. It was like a wish every time a trigger was pulled.

It was a cynical attempt at humor.

Basically, I don't see how magazine-loaded firearms are any more irrelevant to the Constitution than a news channel that lets people preach that to the masses. The whole "The 2nd Amendment should only apply to single-fire muskets" jab is a nonsense argument.

I generally favor liberals over conservatives, but it's their anti-gun BS that makes me distance myself from them somewhat.

^Oh, I see, It's sometime hard to detect sarcasm through text. The anti gun movement is one of the few things of liberals I don't like myself.

RE: I need a favor from all of you in school!

Shouldnt liberals want to uphold a freedom granted by the bill of rights? These titles sometimes make no sense(or better yet, the people dont make sense)
