RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Hello.

My name's Haley and I'm in 11th grade. I was really glad to find this site (obviously). I've been slowly realizing what public school is really about the older I've gotten. Right now, I go to an amazing alternative school so I can't complain, but my past school experience, I assure you, was just as dull and tormenting as everyone Else's. I feel that it's to late for me to do anything about it, as my school years are ending and soon I'll graduate. I really hope that when I'm older, I'll see that students have started something, whether it be protesting, walk outs, or even a revolution. My opinion on my generation ( I'm sixteen) has never really been great. To be honest, I'm kind of revolted by the mass amounts of attention that we give computers and how greatly we value them. It annoys me that I'm the only one in my class that doesn't have a cell phone or Facebook, tumbler, twitter, and all that crap. Still, for the first time after discovering this site, I've begun to have great pride and faith in my generation. I believe that you guys can do something about school.
god why'd i pick such a long username...(changed it to something simpler).

Hello.

We will do something about it, but change is a gradual process. So is reversing the ageist, authoritarian bigotry this society soaks itself in.

Specifically? Maybe, probably, but this person is probably the first to word it like that.

Hello.

The fact that you're getting out of school doesn't mean it's too late for you to do anything. In fact, it means you have more opportunities to change it. You can go and get a degree in education and help change the school system from there, you can be a teacher, etc. You could also right books and do things like the EFO (http://edfreedom.org).

Some change can happen quickly... especially in individual people's lives or in specific networks of people, with the right conditions. For example, introduce a new model of education, find educators who are frustrated with the status quo not working, and either change things or open a new school... or use a new networked format of connected learning.

Exactly. There are also many more paths than just getting an education degree. There are many ways to teach and help people learn other than teaching in a traditional school. Many teachers are looking for better ways to teach, and learners are looking for better ways to learn, inside or outside of traditional school, in alternative schools or on their own.

And, there are more ways than ever to document that independent learning (badges, Accredible.com, Degreed.com, portfolios, and so on.)

And... it's important for learning to continue beyond school... making sense of life, developing skills, growing and improving at things... all those things school often doesn't help with very much.

So, it's up to everyone to look at how learning environments can be done better. Even forum and social media interaction can be a source of learning... and even these interactions can be documented and certified as meaningful steps... just as meaningful as assignments done for a class. This is one of the things connected learning is all about.

See Extreme Learning for one group of people who are working on promoting different kinds of learning.

Here's another person, George Siemens, who developed the concept of "connectivism," about de-schooling society:

Change is happening if you know where to look for it. The next question is where you might want to fit into it.
