RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

My New Book about Education

It's called Twenty First Century Auschwitz and it's available in paperback and kindle editions on Amazon.com.

I've named it Auschwitz because school is a concentration camp - it's a brainwashing facility designed to create perfect citizens who don't even know how to flip burgers when they come out!

Welcome Of course, welcome here.

It's nice to see someone has actually written a book which tackles the bowels of American education. Perhaps this will become widespread like, say, Lies My Teacher Told Me.

My New Book about Education

Interesting. In addition to buying your book, what kind of help are you looking for?

Around here, one of the biggest problems is that a lot of people think change can't happen anytime soon. I've found a lot of examples that show that change is possible, and I think a lot of people are realizing the factory-model of education needs to change. One of the biggest roadblocks I see is how existing educators, administrators, and even students think about the "comply-or-defy" factory model as the only way to do things.

Fortunately, there are a growing number of alternatives.

Have you seen Nikhil's book? http://nikhilgoyal.me/book/

And... Dunjen's site? http://whatisschoolgoodfor.com/

And... if you want to dig through a bunch of walls of text, here's one thread related to this big, knotty problem called factory model schooling:

The Jeff Bliss incident

It helps a lot that there are a growing number of examples of people saying "there's a problem here..."

The question I see is how to go from that... and people continuing to share their stories... to being able to initiate conversations about change within particular schools, families, and even people's own personal learning processes.

Ultimately, the challenge remains of how people figure out life, and learn, using the explosion of resources and ways for connecting with mentors, interesting work, and so on, without always needing that piece of paper. One of my goals is figuring out how to develop better maps to all the resources and options that are out there.

What are your plans for what to do next?

No "I'll pirate it" option?

Hmm. I'll have to give the two available options some thought.

Soon as I get my tablet, I'm installing the Kindle app and gonna go on an anti-school book buying spree. I'll start with this one. Smile

Thank you SoulRiser! It's an honor.
However, I recommend the paperback because the formatting for the kindle edition is off Biggrin

meh, shipping to South Africa is a bitch though. How bad is the formatting? As long as it's legible I don't care. Razz

RE: My New Book about Education

I haven't looked at it in awhile but it's legible although a tad annoying lol
I might fix it in the future if it's really a pain
