RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Bug Age Restriction For Dropping Out Of High School

Help!! I am having an occurring problem with the school system and need to drop out. I am turning eighteen November 12th and I am getting kicked out by my Father. I need to drop out for the reason of getting a job and working long hours. With school I cannot do that. I am also dropping out because I am turning eighteen and I am still in the 10th Grade. The school will kick me out before I am 20 years old, that mixed with a constant need to kick people's teeth in that bully me. I have already been suspended twice because I will not take their bull. I was told that in the state of FLORIDA, until I am at the age of 19 I need to have a parent, school conference to get the drop out forms to leave the school and continue my education elsewhere. I need to know about all of this information. My counselor refuses to give me the information saying, "You need to stay in school." This is what I have to say to this damn school! Fu

Will your job not allow you to work full hours until you've officially dropped out? Could you get more than one part-time job to make up for this perhaps?

19 is an odd number... most other things are either 16, 18 or 21... you sure they're not lying and it's actually 18?

Maybe try contacting someone from here and see if you can arrange to take the GED early, then nobody can hassle you about school stuff ever again.
http://ged.fldoe.org/

I think that 19 age requirement is a lie. You need to be 18 to take the GED, but can't leave school until 19? That makes no damn sense.

You can probably get the form you need on your school district's web site.

You basically have to file a statement with the district that acknowledges your "reduced earning potential" if you drop out.

Can you just get your father to sign the forms, as long as he's kicking you out?

Otherwise, show your school this:
http://schools.stlucie.k12.fl.us/spm/fil...cyK-12.pdf

A student who attains the age of 18 years during the school year is not subject to compulsory school attendance beyond the date upon which he or she attains that age.

Google "declaration of intent to terminate school enrollment" for some more links, and/or ask your school officials how you file that.

Btw, what are your plans for the future? What are your interests and all that?

Age Restriction For Dropping Out Of High School

Well, my friend is getting me a job with him in construction. So, it will be very long hours and a lot of hard labor. The pay is good however since the fact is I am starting out with almost nothing when my father kicks me out in November. Plus, it would give me rent money so my other friend can purchase a two bedroom condo instead of one. I have a list of some things I could pawn. (Mostly old jewelry that I collected as a child.) I pawned two watches and a gold chain and I got 120. I have over 45 pieces of old jewelry. School, it is causing way too much stress. I have been getting suspended because when someone hits me. I fight back and beat the shit out of them instead of taking it. I am going to get kicked out permanently anyways. The school doesn't like me because I have so many problems with bullying. Also, the whole (No pass, no drive) Doesn't really work. My friend dropped out, got his ID, has a job now. Is getting his licence very soon and it is all approved.

Construction pays well. I worked for 2 days once, and got $300 bucks(It was about 23 hours in those two days, and only two days because I was only 17 and didn't have a license, so the boss couldn't transport me from my home to the new job that was farther away)

Isn't there some legal mumbo-jumbo to prevent you from being forced into independence till you can sustain yourself?(as in parents still provide for you till you can get yourself set up). There should be something like that in the law books, though it'll probably depend on the state.

Sounds like school is no longer a benefit for you. It's best you drop them, and you can concentrate better on getting yourself a foundation for your independence along with working on getting a GED.

My Father's whole thing is find a dead-end job until I die. He is a bully to me and has always been. He calls me names and then when someone tries to stick up for me (Family or Friends) he just makes them feel like shit. He used to be an interrogator in the military. He can get inside people's heads. He told me that it is an ignorant idea and that I am tweaking out, he is going to call the behavioral services and get me taken away.

If your 18 and he's trying to kick you out, he's kind of given up the power to "call behavioral services", since you're technically an independent adult.

Hell, you could probably even sue him for something(emotional distress, abuse, negligence or even assault). If he was an interrogator, he's probably attempting to feed you information and prevent you from learning the real deal in order to manipulate you. Bluffing and lies tend to be an interrogators main weapons. And abuse. The entire idea is to degrade the target and get into their minds.

Age Restriction For Dropping Out Of High School

Well, he DID just kick me out on Friday. I need to know if I can get some way to get food stamps. I am still in the process of finding a job at the moment since I am still seventeen. I am currently living with my ex-girlfriend in her house and her mother is not the richest but, is nice enough to let me reside there. I figured food-stamps would help out if needed.

You could try getting some part-time writing jobs on sites... like these:
http://www.textbroker.com/
http://thecontentauthority.com/application-to-write

Not sure if they give a damn what age you are... doesn't seem that way. I think Paypal's requirement is only 13, so you should be able to get paid as well.

SoulRiser! You are a savior! I filed my Declaration of Intent for School Termination and all I need is my mother's signature and I am out. My mom is going to sign soon. The school will no longer have a hold of me anymore. I also have recommendations at Burger King, Denny's, and Spencer's Gifts. Haha! Things are looking up X3
