RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I always sit low in my seat to get some privacy. These schools are prisons.

You don't exactly expect privacy on public transportation, do you?

RE: In the bus we're monitored by a pro-vision camera.

They were all over my middle and high schools as well. You kind of just have to deal with the fact that cameras in public places are here to stay. Privacy in public is not to be expected. The only places I can think of off the top of my head where you can reasonably expect to not have cameras is in the bathroom and in store changing rooms. Even there some places have taken it upon themselves to do so anyway, but they usually are in the wrong legally.

In the bus we're monitored by a pro-vision camera.

I wonder what they think of people who consciously observe the devices made to observe?

Yesterday I peered into one of those security cameras with the round black coverings(making it difficult to see where the camera is pointed) at the train station while waiting for the train. I figured out that if you stand right underneath them and look carefully, you can see where they point Biggrin

Ah, those are called dome cameras. The funny part is, a lot of them tend to be fake. Most places will mix in real dome cameras with dummies to make it appear that all angles are covered to save money and resources. It works well as a deterrent.

In the bus we're monitored by a pro-vision camera.

It's a habit of mine to scout for security cameras, and guess where their coverage is. I just started doing it because I found it entertaining. And I also don't mind staring directly into the cameras, like I've mentioned. Considering the fact that no one really does it, it'll seem quirky. What I wish was being able to see how the people watching(in the case there is someone actively watching) will react or what they'd think when they see somebody sticking their face right in front of the cameras.

Loss prevention workers are trained to keep an eye on people who stare directly in to cameras, because it's assumed that they're scoping for blindspots to conceal goods.

I guess it's too bad then that they'll be wasting time keeping an eye on someone who is just eccentric and finds observing observation devices an amusing way of passing time.
