RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

What my Enviornmental Science teacher claimed

He said beforehand that the internet has taken teachers jobs by creating online schools. He then said something similar to how he isn't afraid of losing his teaching job. Then he said that people could Google find anything, but they didn't learn it, and that they would learn it with a teacher. He has also said that if he were fired, people couldn't do his job unless they know the material.

One, he just recites a lot of material from a job as he goes.
Two, you could learn anything on the internet with the help of videos and audio explanations.
Three, the majority of the material being "taught" is not being "learned".

Thoughts on his claim?

RE: What my Enviornmental Science teacher claimed

My thoughts to it is that he is afraid, afraid of change and the power that the Internet holds over our future, perhaps he is uninformed and would like to discredit the internet's ability to mass educate groups of people for free. I see nothing wrong with this, however he should change his beliefs and go online, and learn something new Smile

I agree.
However, the internet isn't always free, but I understand your point.
We were watching Wall-E. and a video about how machines are taking over jobs.
I do not support industrialization or globalization, nor do I support robots or illegal aliens taking over our jobs, but I would not mind all teachers being fired.

You've had one of those old school teachable moments handed to you by your environmental science teacher. You might be able to take this moment and allow your teacher to learn how the internet can help teachers grow to become coaches and mentors instead of content delivers.

Take a look at this video and see how many things you learn from watching it. Then share this video with your teacher and see if he by chance picks up on the statement made around [5:27] content is context for participating.

There’s a good chance this video and a bit of coaching from you might just change your teacher’s mind on the future of education and his role in a better version of school.

Well, thank you for the video. However, I am unable to watch it right now, but I will in the near future.
Also, I don't think showing my teacher anything is an option.

I think you teacher is just scared of change. He doesn't seem to understand that force-feeding isn't learning.

RE: What my Enviornmental Science teacher claimed

Online schooling will be able to replace the jobs of any teachers who find themselves out of the job due to it. There's plenty of positions opening up every year, because it's becoming a more popular way to learn all of the time. If teachers are afraid of not having a job because of the internet, they just aren't thinking it all the way through.

What I don't like is when online teachers have the job because they just don't want to do anything. My history of world civilization professor has made multiple mistakes on quizzes, and after having them brought to her attention she won't even correct the scores, much less actually interact with us in the discussion board.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

I support robots taking over our jobs. Course I'd also support becoming a cyborg. Now where'd I put my robotic arm?

I will never become a cyborg. Those guys are going to run the earth one day, and I will be part of the anti cyborg revolution, bashing in artificial metal cyborg skulls.

Lets see. Human flesh verse titanium alloy. It might be a challenge...

speaking of cyborgs, they actually have something known as the transhumanist movement that aims to improve humans via technology.
