RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

"Our school is a community! We come here to learn about love and respecting each other. You're all apart of a wonderful student body were everybody respects each other."

Anyone else hear this bullshit at their schools or is it just me?

I think my school has tried to pull this bullshit as well.

I find it funny how they try to describe school as some sort of friendly, happy, meaningful utopia, when in reality it's the exact opposite. Seriously, in an environment filled with so many god damn social groups which pretty much hate each other, and certain groups seem to pick on other students which aren't like them, I'm seriously surprised that schools try to pass on this bullshit.

Is my school like a happy community? Hell no. Is my school like a prison filled with different groups (kinda like prison gangs, except less dangerous) which all hate each other? Yes.

"Community"
That's a strange way to spell "Prison"

^ Ha! That's funny.

What makes all of this worse is how parents react. They love their kids so much that they'll send 'em off somewhere for 6 hours just so they have their kids outta their hair for a bit. School's get away with so much bullshit 'cause all parents say is: "I send my little honeybun to school to learn about many different topics. So she/he grows up to be a wonderful and educated person!"

You know, I believe school's do this for reputation. To m̶a̶k̶e̶ delude parents feel confident their child is going to a "safe environment". When someone has a serious problem (with all the social cliques/gangs) teachers claim to have a warn, welcoming hand and they say they're willing to help but when you actually report something, they really couldn't give a shit.

It's annoying having brainwashed parents...really annoying, really irritating.

I couldn't agree more. You matter how many times you try to explain stuff to them, they brush you off as a "stupid kid".

It's funny when they say "School is good for you. We have your best interests in mind!" because there are tons of studies that have shown the negative effects of sitting in a classroom all day being forced to remember stuff. Another funny thing. Going back to the community aspect, anyone notice how they encourage being united and communal yet you get yelled at when talking in class? Even when the teacher isn't teaching and you're just doing work they still yell.

Ugh, I can't stand adult ageist arrogance. God forbid if one of their students knew more than them. I seriously love it how adults think all students are dumb and only care about video games, texting, dating, reality shows, etc. It's sickening. They're not aware there are a lot of students who learn at home at their own pace and time, and learn far more than they do at school.

And yes, I do notice that occasionally the teacher might yell (or tell you to stop). Like everyone has pretty much said: school is not a community. It is a prison, and I don't think that my best interests include waking up every day at 7AM and repeating a same boring cycle.

I couldn't agree more with any of this. Spot on with how adults think. It's funny how they give kids shit for the things they do, when the adults do no better. I know plenty of teachers who hate video games but watch movies all the time. Same with dating. They gossip with other teachers about all that stuff yet when kids do it, they're automatically stupid.

Community is school's facade. Not to mention letting our brains rot because of this cycle. I once complained about school being boring and my shithead cousin and uncle told me "The way you could possibly be bored is if the stuff is too easy for you." Never mind not interesting or monotonous. It has to be "too easy" and "not challenging enough". Who the hell are they tell me how I feel about something and what requirements you need to feel a certain way?
