RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Year Guide - October

October - more than Halloween

Even if Halloween for you is just watching Charlie Brown every year , there is more to October than Halloween. First the public focus switches from the beginning of school (September) to Halloween so bye-bye back to school ads. And you should have adjusted from summer by now. Weather wise, fall is here, it will begin to cool off and the days will become shorter and the clocks start falling behind. (To be honest, my favorite time of the day is evening twilight where everything gets that blue hue, so thats one thing I like about fall.) But if you are planning some for Halloween, you may get what I call, pre-event syndrome, it's where you start thinking about the event and it starts feeling like the days are slowing down. Yes even though there is no "Halloween break", October is still a heck of a lot better than September.

Year Guide - October

October has the "damn, I'm in school vibe". Pretty depressing for me. Not the worst month though. I'd say the worst months are around January-February (after winter break) when the weather is shitty and you don't get any break for a long time, even though you're halfway through hell.

RE: Year Guide - October

I like October because of the weather. I love breathing the cool, crisp air. And all you need is a light jacket. But then the snow comes, and can't really function too well outside anymore.

I never really like January ether, but September has that "damn, I'm in school" vibe, and if you payed attention to some of the ads make it a lot worse with advertising that back to school crap. That's a reason why I like October is because the media goes from "back-to-school" to Halloween

Year Guide - October

October for me has the "COLLEGE GIVE ME DA PAYCHECK NOWH!" since I'll be getting some extra cash that isn't being used to cover the covered tuition.

I also enjoy the coming cold, and darker days. It's so much more comforting than that blasted sun and heat.

RE: Year Guide - October

October has always been more or less a chill month for me. I always get excited for the holidays and the chilled weather is a break from summer. I just don't like it getting dark at 5...

Year Guide - October

October is when school gets locked in motion for me, but I still like the month as a whole. The MLB playoffs and football season get into motion as well. Plus, Halloween is fun too.

RE: Year Guide - October

The only thing I like about Halloween is the free candy. Sure beats paying for them...

Course I dont even remember the last time I went out for Halloween. It always feels like any other day sans the annoying kids ringing the doorbell which I ignore Biggrin

RE: Year Guide - October

This Halloween, I'll try to give the kids rocks (like in Charlie Brown) warped in paper towels so the suspense builds up, but when they open it, it's a rock.

Also, thanks to replying to this thread, I felt like
quitting the year guide because the September entry seemed ignored, so I gave October a shot and these replies are giving me the morale boost I need
