RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

once again my mom compromises my health

First my headaches and stomach pains are irrelevant. Now my rapidly disappearing tooth is irrelevant.

This is an issue that's kind of very embarrassing to me by the way.

So I've had this cavity since I was very young. like 11 or so. And now I'm 17 and it has been slowly growing and growing and has now become a giant gapping black hole that that has pretty much cleared out about 1/4 of my tooth. Luckily it's near the back of my mouth a hardly noticeable. But I know it's there.

And when you wake up in the morning and do this chewing motion and hear crunch crunch and spit out a tiny piece of tooth you really remember that hey, this tooth is pretty fucked up.

And same with the headaches and the stomach aches I've been urging my mother to bring me to get it checked out.

And unlike with with headaches and stomach aches it can't just be ruled out as "oh well maybe it's stress"

No, a fucking tooth like this is a definite problem that can cause some major fucking problems..

I don't know about you guys, but I don't exactly enjoy having to chew on one side of my mouth. And I definitely don't enjoy the pain that comes when accidentally chewing on the wrong side.

And I'd also prefer to NOT have a fucking abscess in my mouth.

And you'd think out of all the people in my house my mom would be the first one to understand. You see my mom has this disease called Sjögren's syndrome. Which causes the glands that produce tears and saliva to be destroyed. And as I'm sure you guys know, saliva plays an important part in tooth health. So because of it, her teeth chip very easily and stuff. By the time she was in her 40s she had to have ALL of her top teeth removed and now has to wear dentures for her top teeth.

Probably what's gonna happen. Just gotta get my mom to actually care enough to make a fucking appointment.

I told her about it and she didn't say anything or even acknowledge I was there. I asked her again she started yelling saying, "well I gotta make an appointment, we can't just go!"

And I know unless I light a fire under her ass she won't do shit.

Rant with her. Release your rage. Don't go too aggressive, but make it known you need to be taken to the doctor.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

Do you have the dental insurance to get it done, and how are you guys financially? if your mom doesn't have the funds to get it done, then that's one thing, but if she straight doesn't care then that's another.... also she won't be able to sign off for you at the dentist if you eat her... just sayin' Smile

I think we have dental insurance. And we're not really financially set to be able to pay for a dentist without insurance.

So yeah. I don't know if she just doesn't care or what. But I'm seriously sick of having this tooth just disappearing.

Wow, a tooth that bad can actually let bad shit into your bloodstream and cause far worse (and more expensive) problems later. Be sure to mention the 'expensive' part, since that seems to be all she cares about... Rolleyes

once again my mom compromises my health

For a problem like that, you can get an emergency visit. Find a dentist and explain the problem, ask them to fit you in. Can't you make your own appointment?

If you don't have a dentist, find one... call some places... if you don't have insurance, pay in installments, and/or find a cheap clinic.

That is really disturbing. If there's that one, there are likely other cavities. I've gone too long without seeing a dentist before and when I finally went it was like "good thing you didn't let this go any longer." At some point they can just do fillings, but eventually they have to do root canals, crowns, extraction, all these things that can be prevented.

Find a way to at least go in and have it checked out. Do you know of a place you can go?

RE: once again my mom compromises my health

I could make my own appointment, I just don't know how. And I'm pretty sure I have dental insurance. I don't know how to go about making and appointment and shit though. I've never learned.

There's a clinic in my town so that's good.

And yeah, I already know I have other cavities. When I was in the hospital they had to send to a dentist. i guess it was mandatory. Of course all they did was look in my mouth and say "well there's this, this and this" and after that, nothing.
It was a state run and payed for place. I kind of expected them to do something about my mouth while I was there.

meh..

Just call your dentist and tell 'em what's up and ask to give you an appointment asap. Good luck Smile

I know the feeling. Add this to the list of things you don't learn in school...

First, see if you can find more information about your insurance. Is your mom actively trying to stop you from going, or is she just avoiding the issue? She probably has an insurance card or other documentation. Try to find that out.

Next, find one or more dentists or clinics. One way to find them is to ask friends, relatives, neighbors, anyone you can find. You might want to start with the clinic you already know about.

Then, call them, and tell them you have a big cavity and you're losing pieces of tooth. Find out what they charge, see if they take your mom's insurance, and see if you can make payments. If you can, call a few places and compare prices.

Then, go in. Once I had a tooth chip, I didn't know any dentists where I lived and a I got a referral from a friend. I was able to call and get in right away and it didn't cost that much. Just make it clear that it's a big deal.

That's horrible. What a messed up health system. My advice is, try to set it in your mind that it's up to you to make it happen, even if it should be your mom.
