RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Hello!

I am 16 years old and a proud Canadian. I am planning to join the Canadian Military, when I am through with shitty high school. It is good to know I am not the only one who hates high school.

Hello!

Good to have you here. You're obviously not the only one. We proudly welcome international users, since it gives us a better perspective on how school works in other countries. I've heard high school in Canada is like in the US, which is bad.

Hello!

If it was in the US, I'd say you'd be better off not enlisting unless you're willing to have a rod shoved up your ass by psychotic drill sergeants who decide when you eat or shit.

But I don't know how Canada does it, and my assumption of Canada would be drill sergeants who ask with a "please?" rather than threaten to chew you for breakfast, so I guess I can't be of much help there Razz

RE: Hello!

@SoalRiser the military will be very fun! At least I get life skills, benefits and a paycheck. Fuck school.

@brainiac3397 Lol the Canadian military basic is not like the Americans at all. Drill instructors are nice to you if you don't fuck up on something and if you listen to there instructions. If you don't then they can make your life worse.

@Dunjen I hate school because all the stress and boring work. And I will not get 12 years of my life back when I graduate

Hello!

I consider the 12 years I lost more so a period of 12 years of figuring out what to do and learning from both your mistakes and that of others. I also don't consider my 12 years as a true part of who I am, as sort of "detached". There were many things I did and didn't, and they're something of a guide to what I should do and shouldn't do.

Plus there wasn't really much I could do in the 12 years I lost, so it doesn't really matter now that I'm free and independent.

RE: Hello!

@Lollipopgirl I don't watch anime. I watch anime when I was younger like naruto and bleach. I don't really play that much video games only sometimes like halo 4.

@|55555| The military is the only job out there that appeals to me because, you get to use weapons receive life skills do some fantastic work like close protection and much more!Best of all serving under the Canadian Flag.

@brainiac3397 how does it feel to be free and independent? Since I am assuming you don't live in your parents house you could do whatever pleases you, right? I want to be independent :-[

Hello!

Hah. I still reside in my parents home, but I guess the cultural differences(between my culture, and the "American" culture) have a factor here. In my culture, it's common for families to live together yet maintain their independence. It's pretty helpful since I don't have to worry about some things.

Course I don't believe in adhering to one specific culture, as I consider myself to be a cosmopolitan(as in cosmopolitanism), so I mix in things here and there. So while staying at home isn't an issue for me(and is quite logical really), I do aim to provide my own shelter soon enough to be able to have privacy at the least.

I realized how good freedom and independence was when I stayed in Turkey for 2 months without either of my parents. I did stay with relatives but they were just like "You're technically an adult now, you know what you're doing." while just supporting me via shelter, food and finance.

Hello!

Till you get smacked with the bills and taxes and insurance and etc. Course if you're weird like me and actually enjoy paperwork, then life is fine.
