RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Middle school has already proved to be another hell

Middle school has just started. It is already crushing me. I do not have any time to work my creative abilities, and have no esteem to spend eight hours wasting time with meaningless scraps of knowledge. It is not learning. Learning is being taught about something you are interested in. None of this interests me or at least explains why it is important. Oh wait, it does. It gives an entirely false story to parents that school is a secure and safe place for your child to grow, while really it is a ticking time bomb about to explode with the very depression and outrage of students. They keep telling us that school is a comparison the real world, or jobs and work. And they tell us to find a job that you are happy and productive at. So basically, they are contradicting themselves. And what the hell. We are going through "older kid changes" but we are still kids. Shouldn't kids be happy, on-going people who have fun and find a way to learn? Yes. But that is not the way they run it. No, they make it a stress-compelling nightmare where you are often humiliated by teachers and kids alike. Who gives a shit if we are growing older? We just got back from a huge care-free break. You expect us to suddenly behave like an army of zombies who do not deserve any respect because of our different opinions? I do not have much hope for humanity at this point. Please, God help me, I do not want to go to this vortex of torment, the only people here who enjoy school are the boys that make jokes about everything, (and believe me, I don't blame them.) and they are treated like spiders in a therapy room. Seriously. I do not know what to do other then pretend like I have good thoughts about school. Is that my only option? On this thread, please post why you hate HOMEWORK. (Let's just get a discussion going) Whoever created HOMEWORK deserves to be hammered immediately.

Middle school has already proved to be another hell

Middle school sucked big time for me. It was hell on earth. So bad I was thinking of suicide (way back in 2009 though). Your first day was bad? Well great, it's about to get worse. Much worse. If you're not part of the cliques, well too bad.

Middle school is filled with all sorts of douchebags. In fact, one might say it's worse than high school. This is where school hierarchy is bred and born, with the swag fake gangstas, the Hollister/Abercrombie snobs, and the straight up douchebags. Good lord, my middle school was filled with horrible people.

Sorry if this sounds seriously depressing, but I can't say middle school is going to be your golden age. Exact opposite. The best thing you can do is find some sort of hobby or good habit to keep you preoccupied during the long, tedious, and turbulent school year. Even with my massive depression, I was able to keep myself entertained by following sports. Find something that fits you. Middle school is hell, but that doesn't mean you can't survive.

It is actually my second day. Right now I have found myself writing and designing (because I am interested in that field) and I have literally been listening to Christmas music. I am so sad about this time of year that I cannot wait for winter, Christmas, thanksgiving, anything fun and I get to take a break. Them taking away recess has been sucky. I need a break other than lunch. I cannot believe they are still wondering why child obesity is a problem. We do not have recess, we get to mentally exhausted, hell, I do not have anything active this quarter. It sucks...

RE: Middle school has already proved to be another hell

Actually, funny enough, here are some studies about the lack of recess:
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/28...vior/?_r=0
http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/co...1.abstract
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/here...d-symptoms

Once again though, the stubbornness of the education system means that we won't see recess in all schools for some time. Seriously, the people who make shit like NCLB have to think in a FPV about a hot school room filled with 20-30+ kids learning some lecture. Do you really think it encourages learning?

Middle school has already proved to be another hell

It irks me when they compare school and work. As I've said a billion times in countless places to countless people, at work YOU GET PAID!

Plus the workplace is technically a two-side agreement between employer and employee. Schools are just lopsided to the admins who think they're doing the best on your behalf as long as you shut up.

I would even say k-12 does not prepare for college. I actually got in trouble once because, as the teacher told my parents, I was "treating the class as a college class" but that I was "still in high school and should follow our rules". Course every other day we're told how we're all being prepared for college.

All k-12 taught me was how to smell bullshit from a mile away Biggrin

RE: Middle school has already proved to be another hell

I wrote a letter to my school about homework back in 6th grade. It was actually extremely well recieved. I'll post it on here if I can find it.

Oh, and there has to be at least a couple of people at your school that aren't complete jerks.

School is 100 times easier with a best friend, and 1000 times easier if you just don't give a fuck.

I'm sending my school a bill for the money they owe me. I'll be nice enough to leave it at minimum wage(which has gone up to $8.50, though won't kick in for about a year).

So best friend and not giving a fuck is 100*1000. That's pretty damn easy! Smile

According to school staff and admins, school is supposed to be just like work. So I guess just like work, they now owe me my paycheck for everyday I spent sitting in them desks following their rules. Unless hey mean us to be slaves, which would be illegal as per the USC.

RE: Middle school has already proved to be another hell

Very little of what your learning in school will be useful latter in life. Homework is nothing more than crap help fufill the minimum number of grades necessary to the teachers gradebook. I'm pretty sure you've noticed how repetitive and brainless filling it out is. My suggestion : spend as little time as possible on school and homework. Get some real skills. Learn how to invest, manage your money. Get some hobbies. Make some money. I assume your 11~12. You have a good 7-8 years left. Start accumulating income sources. Grow your piggybank to a size where you don't need college or school anymore. Use your skills to find your own way of supporting yourself.

Middle school has to be the bane of every student. 6th grade is so-so, 7th grade is hell on earth, and 8th grade is...well, I just started 8th grade so my opinion is still pending on it, but I have a feeling it'll be... interesting.

True.

6th grade was the worst year for me. 7th grade was slightly better, 8th grade is probably the least worst in my experience.

We had a principal in middle school we unofficially referred to as Hitler. And interestingly enough, our high school principal did look a little like Stalin...

Oh, and here's something you should know....
Colleges generally don't give a crap about what you did in elementary and middle school. It's really 9-12th grade where it really counts.

Important. It basically means your pre-high school stuff are nearly meaningless. Your activities, awards, grades are all basically useless for anything after high school(except for personal story telling).

It's pretty damn annoying really.

It sucks...

You said something really important there, and you should take advantage of it. The idea that something Better is on the edge is so motivating. But the future that your talking about is too far away

You might try finding something to look forward to at the end of everyday and every week. If you can't do that then things are going to really suck. You will be trapped in a blind whirlwind of pointless, monotonous crap without a way out (the future is the best escape) Don't let that happen!! Keep you head above the water and don't lose sight of where your going. And go for the fun thing you have planned. This is where having a best friend comes in handy.

Middle school has already proved to be another hell

Exactly. Find some interests... try to learn something new each day or each week. Keep a journal to track what you see and experience, good and bad. Look for other people who also feel like you do about school.

If you're feeling bold, go investigate why you can't have recess. Interview people, and share their answers here. You could also research what other people are saying about exercise, learning, and health.

And... look at what other people are doing: 9-year-old’s lunch blog shames school into making changes

Colleges generally don't give a crap about what you did in elementary and middle school. It's really 9-12th grade where it really counts.

Exactly. And even then it depends on the college you're talking about. (I dropped out, got a GED, and got "accepted" into college just by handing in an application with SAT scores. Not a highly selective college, but again it depends what your goals are.)

Of course, you can always adapt your life experiences into some kind of paper or story, and get credit or other recognition for your work.
