RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I've been posting here already, but I might as well introduce myself.
I really just found this site simply typing "school sucks" (it's that time of year again), and I found it interesting. Over the past few months I've not thought of the educational system the same, reading how the US educational system is in many ways a big fail. It's a nice forum here, which is dedicated to how much school sucks.

RE: Very belated welcome
I generally do all sorts of stuff. I like to do what the "normal" teenager does (video games, computer games, etc), but I like to write, draw, express my mind, and, like many here, learn at my own pace and not against my damn will, which is actually not learning, but memorizing.

Fanfiction by any chance?
I usually did my writings on RP Forums(Roleplay). Kind of where I worked on my writing abilities. Not sure If I've reached my potential, but I certainly can say after 2 years I've gotten better. Unfortunately I haven't "RPed" in many months and no longer visit the sites either.

I'll write on all sorts of things, so yes, partly fan fiction. I definitely find delight in writing poetry as well.

I never liked poetry, but I could say because the way I was introduced to poetry was less than good.
Same with Shakespeare, I thought I'd never like it. But after school finished, I bought a book with all of Shakespeare writings, plays etc. and actually "experience" it as I read, rather than analyze.
What I learned also would apply to poetry. You don't analyze it, as how teachers want you to, but experience it, feel it. It shouldn't seem like words on a page but "living" descriptions. Course school will rarely teach you that. That's why I can say my interest for poetry and Shakespeare was delayed thanks to school. Luckily I was able to learn the truth for myself.

Yep, schools make books VERY boring. I remember having to analyze Of Mice and Men, and I decided to read it myself. I don't know, reading the thing at your own pace and making your own interpretations and notes rather than being forced to analyze it with the rest of the class was much better.

I also need to give credit to Star Trek:The Next Generation, and to Patrick Stewart in particular(along with the character he portrays, Jean-Luc Picard). That man obviously loves Shakespeare, and I enjoyed his acting, plus the way he emphasizes Shakespearean works, which boosted my interest.

RE: Very belated welcome
The worst part are the grades. Every subject can be interesting if you just took your leisure time to learn about it, not rushed with grades, deadlines, or "professional" criticisms from the teacher.
That's actually kind of the reason I get so stressed about college... I go to a quarter based Univ. where some professors give you 3 assignments per quarter, and it won't matter how well you do in the lectures or understanding of the material, if you fail the assignments, you fail the course.

I'm bumping this for nostalgia. Looking back I really had no idea on the journey I was embarking on when I first posted on here. People change, a lot. I know I have ever since this time.
I wonder what happened to Miab419. I liked his/her posts.
