RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Back to school...

This has nothing to do with the educational system itself, but nonetheless this should go here.

Those goddamn "Back To School" commercials you see being plastered everywhere right around mid to late July and August. Heck, some even start at June. I'm not sure about you, but I don't want to be reminded that I have to go through 9 months of hell again. Thank you, retailers.

Back to school is hell. Course if you wait just a little, you can get good deals outside that time as well.

RE: Back to school...

I enjoy the beginning of summer more. Im relieved to be out of school for 2-3 months. Then I remember late July/August is the period where summer is basically over: the ads come on promising better deals, the teachers/ professors send emails about "How exciting and promising this new year will be!", getting back into the school routine...

College will be a certainly odd experience when you consider k-12 schedules of everyday of the weekday.

My schedule for fall semester at the moment is just Monday-Thursday(2 classes) and Wednesday with one class. That means I've got 4 days I don't have classes.

Course If I do well on the calculus placement test(enough to be considered placed in calculus level class), I may have fewer days due to taking physics(with lab) and calculus as math. But still, the schedules are "unique".

Indeed. That first day always has a special feeling. You can finally chill, get a snack or drink, or, like what I did, I started playing "Party Hard' by Andrew W.K. and partying around. You then go to sleep feeling good, and wake up, knowing that you've got 3 months of freedom.

August always feels very depressing. You always get the "here we go again" vibe. That, with the blazing weather that usually accompanies it, always depresses me. The worst part of the school year, though, is always October-December (before winter break), when the days get shorter and you start to get your assignments.

EDIT: @Braniac: My sister always tells me that in college, the professor can literally cancel class when he/she wants to. She's had days where all her classes were cancelled.

At least college has those "spots" during the year, thanks to the way classes work, that'll make the transitions easier.

Plus hopefully I'll be attending the AFROTC, which may make my summers more interesting.

It just sucks that ROTC is pretty neglected in NJ, there's only 2 AFROTC programs in NJ and a new NROTC that started last year. Means that there's a lot of cross-town agreements, and being stuck having to travel to another college just to participate.

Yeah, they occasionally cancel class, and I think the general rule is that if the prof is 15 minutes late or more, you can leave class without being responsible for it (for my school anyway)

Supposedly being late to class + early dismissing makes a professor popular, according to something I saw on Rate my Professor.

Most people know when summer is ending when the leaves change color, for me, the warning comes when I see the back-to-school sale commercials on TV

And talks of the football season, which takes over all American social life for about 4-5 months.
Late class starts, early dismissals, and most of all, liniency of their teaching and grading system

I never cared for football. I did watch the last game of the Superbowl, or whatever, with my friends, who insisted I come. I really came for the food(Yes. I do like to eat good food, and from a variety of cuisines. The stimulation of my taste buds is quite enjoyable Razz But mind you, not junk food or the likes)

These American people are as obsessed with football as the Romans were with gladiator combat, and we saw how it didn't benefit them when the Germanic tribes came knocking.

It's too much... It's both annoying and distractive. I enjoy a good game of football with other people every once in a while, but I won't watch it extensively

Goddamn...for those of you who can get off with C's and B's, I'm not going to tell you that you're lucky because nobody deserves to be stuck in a prison with little freedom several hours a day doing forced labor that doesn't even benefit them as much as alternatives. However, when you've got to maintain a 3.8 GPA in all classes minimum for every semester, you just can't stand the thought of another year. Doesn't help that each one just gets worse and worse.

In my experience the 4th semester is usually the best one for me. There's almost always some big project/assignment at the end of the year, but after that, you aren't assigned much homework.

As far as I'm concerned, all of them are painful. In my personal experience, the 4th semester feels like a tease, akin to a Wednesday during school. You think, "Hey, look at that, we're more than halfway through the torture", and yet you still don't get anywhere.

Gaahh, I hate "back to school" commercials. Yes, I'm perfectly aware I'm going back to an internment camp soon, don't remind me, please. I dislike August so much. It's the SUNDAY OF SUMMER, dammit. At the same time though I'm starting to hate summer vacation now after thinking for a while.

"No matter what I do, it'll probably forever remain a pipe dream that will never come true,

True. Brainwashed parents trying to force their children through the same process. Its annoying how people will so strongly defy reason and logic at sometimes. It makes no sense to force a student to focus on keeping their grades up if they arent really earning anything in return.

Well, the whole "grades" are actually based on competition. Basically, school is kinda like a game which you are forced to participate in. It doesn't matter if you learn, you have to keep some imaginative number up by turning in a number of meaningless and mundane tasks!

Competition is not bad in itself, as is can bring out more effort and allow potential to show. But the cutthroat system the education system seems to try to embed into our minds only leads us to lose efficiency. We grow to be selfish in our attempt to be number 1, yet fail to realize that unlike in movies and video games, one man is still at a disadvantage when up against larger numbers.

There's one ad that I absolutely hate. It's where a dad jumps around collecting school supplies and the kids are standing glumly while "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" plays. The main reason why I hate it is because it reminds me of my favorite time of the year during the worst time of the year.
