RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

It sucks. Teachers know they can get away with so much because students are too afraid of taking a stand and taking full advantage of their rights. I see it like this: One kid has a lot of friends, EASY 80%! That loser has two friends, heh, 40%! It's interesting you bring up inequality. This teacher of mine always ranted about how we should treat everyone equally. Too bad he couldn't practice what he preached.

Really, if there's anything school teaches, it teaches how authority acts favorably in some people and mistreats others which have less. It's bullshit.

It is! It causes unneeded stress and anxiety. You report these teachers and everyone makes you look like the bad guy. Even the principals will do that. I guess they don't wanna lose their money makers. People are so brainwashed into the whole idea of being on the teachers side that they don't understand how bad it can get for some of the kids.

RE: School hierarchy

Hmm, because of the inequality we know, we learn to appreciate equality more

That's true. I guess people like the teachers I mentioned will never be able to appreciate equality and take it for granted, then one day, if they get it taken away, they'll know how it feels.

It's kind of a blessing and a curse... It's always been tough for me to decide which, if any, it truly is and should be seen

RE: School hierarchy

I think the sad thing is that these teachers probably have (most likely) felt unequal at some point (and some cases still might) at which they've either forgotten or "grown up." They just don't care for the most part; they've got the paycheck, they do the minimal amount of work that is required if that, go home, then repeat the exhaustive cycle

You're right. It's like all those adults who don't listen to and treat kids like crap 'cause they're kids when they've been treated the exact same way when they were young. It could be them taking out some bottled up raged, but I think it's them feeling a sense of power over someone. Isn't it sad when someone will mistreat another just for a paycheck?

Personally, it may also be because these teachers may feel compelled to "defend" the hierarchy. I don't think teachers of upper-class backgrounds will look nicely down at those of lower backgrounds.

This makes sense. We all know those in the "elite" are usually the ones with the biggest mouths so if the teachers treat those types highly and positive word spreads around, there are chances of maybe promotions and such. It's happened around here. The kids always go on about their favorite teachers and those favorite are usually the ones we see more around here. Usually the favorites are terrible people but that's expected.
