RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Principal's Office TV show

On Tru tv, there was a TV show called "Principal's office." It ran for about half a season, and was abruptly cancelled. The concept is that a student get's in trouble for some the of the usual things. And the camera's follow them into the office. Here's the youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/PrincipalOffice

What do you think of this show?

Principal's Office TV show

Interesting, thanks for the link. I'm actually in the planning stages for a documentary/reality series that addresses education from a much broader perspective.

From the clips I watched, I saw this pattern you see all the time in school -- students who aren't really engaged in interest-driven learning, but they're locked in prison along with their keepers who don't really know what to do with them, except hand over some random punishment and nobody learns anything.

There was another reality show in 2010 called Teach, featuring actor Tony Danza as a classroom teacher:

A&E page: http://www.aetv.com/teach-tony-danza/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teach:_Tony_Danza
Of note: Production was halted at the end of the first semester after the producers felt that existing footage was not dramatic enough, and after Danza refused to allow the producers to try to generate drama among his students. The existing footage was used to create the seven episodes that aired.

One reason these shows don't seem to last long is that school tends to just lack any dramatic significance. Think about other (higher-end) reality shows where there's something at stake -- people want something, they're doing something, they're trying to fix something. There's a story! In factory-model schools, it's like a dramatic dead zone most of the time.

I think it would be far more interesting to contrast the factory model of school with how good learning, teaching, and mentorship really work, when people are engaged in learning and are actually trying to build or do something other than "get by."

What do you think?

Being human, it's quite natural that there will come a time where the only way to maintain control and stress the importance of something will require the drastic use of physical strikes.

Though I rather prefer Theodore Roosevelt's "Speak softly and carry a big stick"

Doubt they really hit the children. Most of the shows on trutv are staged.

Hitting people with blunt weapons is a lot more pleasurable.

But slicing someone doesn't give an audible "thunk" or the "recoil vibration" you feel upon striking. When you wack someone with a blunt weapon, you get to feel the power of your strike, which I find to be quite pleasurable.

Knives I only prefer to quick and silent take downs, a quick thrust into their heart, skull(via ear) or into their neck(a major artery). Course I make exceptions for larger blades as such:

It's got the slice-ey slice-ey of a blade, along with the choppy choppy of an axe(which means a level of "recoil vibration" that can be felt as you crack open your foes' skulls).

RE: Principal's Office TV show

Okay, this is getting a bit morbid.

Slicing someone causes more pain, and it does more damage. With a blunt weapon, you could break some bones, but it stops there unless you get internal bleeding. With slicing, you're slowly losing blood, which can slowly suffocate the guy. I don't find pleasure in that (I wouldn't hurt a fly.), it's just a better advantage.

Slicing may hurt, but blunt weapons have a greater surface area. Plus breaking bones tends to immobilize your enemy better.

And morbid is true. Before firearms, melee weapons were used quite aggressively and ferociously, being more gruesome than what you might encounter on TV or movie even. It was up-close and pretty brutal.

The act of killing is not what is enjoyed, but it's usually preferred you don't dislike what you do in order to avoid any split-second hesitation that might have immense consequences to you. And not hurting a fly may not necessarily imply you wouldn't hurt a human, especially when you consider most insects and pests act on instinct rather than conscious awareness of their actions like humans. An insect may be troublesome due to instinctive behavior, not because they choose it, whereas a human is aware of their actions and usually choose to behave in certain ways.

Thus, I would not hurt a fly or ant(I'd kill mosquito though), but I have no doubt that I would be capable of hurting a human due to having justifiable reasons based on human consciousness and free-will.

it's legal in public schools mostly in bible-belt states. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Corpor...States.svg

Ants don't exactly harm me. Sure, it may be time to call the exterminator when you're home turns into an ant hive, but if you got two or three ants just crawling around in a single incident, there isn't much a reason to smash it.

Plus, I give ants respect after I saw a troop of 8 ants fighting a spider. It was an interesting fight, they managed to rip a piece of the spider's leg off while it had a string of it's web hold 3 of them while trying to kick the others. Then they ended up sliding into a puddle and all drowning except for an injured ant that managed to crawl back into the ant hill.

And I amn't vegetarian(0_o). Hell, I even eat raw meat(a cultural cuisine of raw ground beef mixed with a variety of spices and herbs. It burns my mouth as I'm pretty sensitive to any spice, but tastes pretty damn good)
