RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

RE: Yo dawg, we heard you liked math

Aww I thought it was going to be an intellectual joke.

I actually really like math.

Also if you're interested, here is why you can't divide by 0.

Well division is pretty much subtracted, just multiplication is like addition.
For example 10 divided by 2 really looks like this:
10 - 2 = 8
8 - 2 = 6
6 - 2 = 4
4 - 2 = 2
2 - 2 = 0
See we did that 5 times. 10 ÷ 2 = 5

Now lets say we divide 10 by 0
10 - 0 = 10
10 - 0 = 10
10 - 0 = 10
And so on and so on and you get it. It goes on for infinity.

So why isn't 10 ÷ 0 = ∞

Well first of all Infinity isn't a number. It's an idea.
And then we have this.
Ok, lets break the rules
1 ÷ 0 = ∞
well then
2 ÷ 0 = ∞
So then you get this
1 ÷ 0 = ∞ = 0 ÷ 2

And 1 ≠ 2

therefore, you can't divide by 0.

Actually makes more sense coming from infinity. I had trouble with dividing by zeros (division in general when it came to small decimals) until a teacher of mine gave a visual, which was kinda common sense...

Yo dawg, we heard you liked math

Here's a more simple explanation:

So 10 / 2 = 5, because 10 split up equally into groups of 2 is 5 for each one.

But for 10 / 0, you have no groups to split it up into. 10 has nowhere to go. It cannot be stuffed in nothing, it cannot be split up in nothing. It is impossible.

I think the answer would be -10, not infinity, if that makes any sense.

Yo dawg, we heard you liked math

khan academy has a few videos on this topic https://www.khanacademy.org/math/trigono...eterminate

if you divide any number by smaller and smaller positive numbers (x/1, x/0.1, x/0.001...etc) the amount represented by the fractions becomes larger and larger, so if you follow that pattern, x/0 should be positive infinity. but if you divide x by larger and larger negative numbers (x/-1, x/-0.1, x/-0.001...etc) the pattern suggests that x/0 should become negative infinity, so that seems like a contradiction

another contradiction is this: assume that (x/y)y=x example:(2/3)3=2. then assume (x)0=0 example: (3)0=0.

given: x =/= 0.
set (x/0)=(k)
multiply both sides by 0: (x/0)0=(k)0 <-- (x/0)0 should be equal to x according to "(x/y)y=x", and (k)0 should be equal to 0 according to "(x)0=0"
simplify: x=0
^x can't equal and not equal 0 at the same time, so either one of the two assumptions made earlier were wrong, or you can't divide x by 0 when x =/= 0.

you can divide 0 by 0 though.

set 0/0=k
multiply both sides by 0: (0/0)0=0(k)
simplify: 0=0k, 0=0

so k, or 0/0, could be any number and the math would still be correct. so 0/0 is indeterminate.

Quote:I think the answer would be -10, not infinity, if that makes any sense.

10/-1 is -10. (there are negative ten "negative ones" in ten.) 10/0=? is asking- if 10 were to be divided into a number of pieces with each piece equaling 0, how many pieces would there be? so infinity makes more sense, because you can break off an infinite number of 0's from 10. (but then 10 would never be broken up, so dividing by 0 doesn't make any sense)

I had to know it in my Trig class, and if I recall correctly my Alg II class as well. It's a pretty simple rule to remember. Don't sweat it. Just remember that if you try to divide anything by 0 in your calculator then it shits a brick and tears a wormhole in to the fabric of space at a random location so be careful.

10 isn't nothing. The 0 after the 1 converts it into a value of what we know as TEN(10).

So zero isn't necessarily nothing, because if it was nothing, it would have no meaning placed before or after another value as nothing would be non-existent(thus a blank).

That's how I see zero.

Yet we don't use such systems like roman numerals because they're too large a hassle as the numbers grow larger. Surely nobody would like to do their mathematics with roman numerals.

The zero means there is nothing, thus zero isn't nothing because it has meaning. Nothing wouldn't have a meaning except for being nothing.
