RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

What's middle school like?

Both me and my friend don't know. She doesn't have an account so I've posted it for her. From what I've gathered it's going to be really bad. So really, what's it like?

I like cheese.

What's middle school like?

Considering the fact there are thousands of middle schools, coupled with hundreds of different state systems that tend to vary, with either public, private, charter institutions, along with massively varying demographics...

It's not something that can very accurately be generalized. I'm pretty sure more people consider High School worse.

Like my middle school years were actually far more productive in actually teaching me anything along with far more extracurricular activity involvement(which are all practically meaningless to colleges). But I dislike my middle school years personally because it was before I was reached my current stage of "enlightenment". A state of total self-awareness, individuality and the side-effects of a massive self-confidence explosion and leadership traits. Course it's not like I came about this state suddenly, but rather step by step through random epiphanies(more often after a dream).

Simple answer? It'll vary depending on nouns.

RE: What's middle school like?

There are a lot factors. Assuming you're in America, one of the most important ones is your ethnicity and the racial demographics of your school and your particular course load. The most important factor, however, is you. It mostly depends on how suitable you are for the experience. Some kids have a blast and for others it's hell.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

What's middle school like?

I bet that high school will be worse, but middle school isn't a walk in the park either.

You will be treated like a child from other kids other one or two years older than you. Don't let it get to you.

There are more idiots than you will ever imagine. Thankfully, they usually all stay around one place at recess/lunch, so they are easy to avoid.

Get a group of tough friends, and practice confidence (maybe even work out some) to get away from bullies. A good bash to the head will do good if needed.

Age discrimination is huge in middle school, especially from authority.

Don't worry about grades and getting in trouble. Although you should try and get good grades and stay out of trouble, don't sweat it when you fail a test or get called down to the office. In your future, they will focus on the last years of high school, not the stupid shit you've done in middle school.

Don't fear teachers or the principal. Treat them like you would treat anyone, with respect and honesty. If they are being ageist annoying pathetic rude jerks, call them out on it. You don't deserve to be treated like shit. It's not like they can do anything to you.

Make sure you keep a list of all your rights in your binder, pocket, etc. If you feel one is being violated, tell the teacher/principal. If the teacher/principal is the one you feel is violating your rights, again, call them out on it. Don't let them get by with shit excuses they come up with. Don't let them use their authority on you. Don't let them do anything stupid like that. Know your shit.

I can't think of anything else right now, I hope I thought of everything.

What's middle school like?

Me and my friends once had our textbooks taken away for a while in math class. We'd constantly use the cover of our books to shine sunlight into people's eyes, or onto the teacher while she faced the board(so her back was being hit).

She caught on when she noticed 5 or 6 "blots" of light dancing around the chalkboard though it took a bit longer to figure out who were responsible. It was quite fun Smile

Middle school did have more humourous and entertaining moments for me...

RE: What's middle school like?

Personally, Middle School was the worst. But then again, I wasn't the most "normal" of kids. I didn't start shaving until 7th grade and I'm a GIRL. I hardly brushed my hair. Or showered. I came out as bisexual. I started teasing my hair. Yes, like a stupid scene kid. Ugh, if I ever do that again, hurt me. I wore a studded choker. Moster tab around my neck. Nightmare Vefore Christmas arm warmers.

I got teased relentlessly. But all of a sudden, every one grew up over the summer between 8th and 9th (And I learned daily personal hygiene and at least I teased my hair properly at that point). I started to mature and not be so, wel annoying (though I probably still am). I didn't get teased for my looks or for being bi anymore. Which is odd because everyone says high school is the worst.

Tl;dr. Middle School sucked for me. It did a 180 in high school and it's 185935920x better.

I'm back~

I heard that middle school are a lot stricter than they used to be, too. You'd probably get suspended or at least detention just for a harmless prank you thought would be funny.

I personally hate going to middle school. Everyone's a jackass, I have zero friends, no one cares about my existence until they want something, people treat me like I'm stupid, and the lunches are gross.

RE: What's middle school like?

It'll likely be a miserable experience, and even more so if you fail to form connections with like-minded individuals as I had been unable to do. If you manage to not become ostracized, then it'll be more tolerable. You'll still have to deal with people who haven't matured as much as others have, and the bar for maturity in middle schoolers is set pretty low as it is. You'll become bored to tears by dull teaching methods, but that's probably nothing new to you at this point. Whatever it is you do after school and between school days will have to keep you content. This also will probably be nothing new to you.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

Some advice:
1. Pretend to be friends with a nerd. They'll do all your work for you.
2. Don't eat the cafeteria food. Just don't. If you have to, skip lunch.
3. Ask your teacher if you can listen to your iPod during homeroom. Tell him/her it helps you concentrate.
4. Try to get a seat in the back of the class, so that the teacher can't tell if you're doing work or just screwing around.
5. Try to get ahold of a blank hall pass and photocopy it, and keep a couple in your pocket along with a pen. Learn how to fill them out. Although if you know you suck, don't risk it.
6. If you want to get out of class, say you have a stomachache or a headache and go to the nurse's office and just chill there.

It seems to be a rule for cafeteria food to be gross. Bleach!

There is a certain person in this world who I owe my sanity to.

RE: What's middle school like?

It really depends. For me, 6th grade was good, 7th grade was bad because of circumstance, and 8th grade was bad because of mindset. It was meh, looking back at it. It depends on the teachers and the policies. I had GREAT teachers for 6th grade. I was supposed to loop with them, but I got switched because of the special ed program. Those teachers were meh, with one REALLY bad one which my therapist called "mentally sick". (The special ed teacher was really good, though.) I was so soured by that, I hated school. I automatically had a bad time in 8th grade because of that. Yes, school is bad, but I had 2 antiquate teachers and 2 AWESOME teachers. (One of them grew up in Liverpool and is friends with Paul McCartney's brother!) I was too busy wallowing in despair to notice that. My advice; Don't let experiences sour you. You never know what's around the corner.

Oh, and always bring a cold lunch. Always.

Middle school was so easy. It really isn't that bad, sure there are jerks around. But as long as you have friends it will be a good time.

7th grade is arguably the worst year of school but everything else isn't too bad.

I have to quote this because my middle school situation is pretty much the same. But it just shows the amount of factors that play into this whole thing. Some people have better middle school experiences depending on sooo many things.

But Thade and I experienced pretty much ALL the same factors becuase.. history.

RE: What's middle school like?

Middle school can be really, really, bad depending on what type of person you are. If you are socially awkward/isolationist, then good luck for you! Middle school will surely likely be hell on earth! The "cool" kids and even just the normal kids can be very tough.

What's really troublesome is that it's quite sudden once you've transitioned into middle school. Nothing is the same compared to elementary school. It's much worse if you have to go to a middle school in another district, because you don't know anyone. Unfortunately, I did.

The level of bullying varies. Nowadays, it's much more subtle, but it comes in all forms. People will ignore you completely, even if you try to speak to them. Sometimes, they'll push you, they'll call you names, they'll just do all sorts of things. It's really bad when you have very few friends. I was able to hang out with the misfits (and I still do, in my opinion, those guys are the best guys you can hang out with, as they're open and are nice), but where I went to there weren't a whole lot of misfits, I was in a bad minority. Some people will show disdain, people will nitpick. AKA, my first 2 years were hell. I found in 8th grade I was able to settle down quite nicely, and break out of my shell. However, not all people are able to do it. I was contemplating suicide as early as 2009, it was really tough. Though those suicidal thoughts dissapeared (did I misspell it?) after the Summer of 2009, I didn't fully recover from my middle school PTSD until 2012, when I was well into high school. It affected me a lot. It took 4 and a half years of therapy for me to fully recover. It's not fun.

Find some smart, nice friends and stick with them. People are going to start hating eachother in middle school and section off into friend groups.
