RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

My introduction

Hi. I would like to introduce myself. I don't really know what to say. I am 14 years old. I live in South Africa. I live with my grandmother, she is probably the only person in my life who encourages me. I have lived with her ever since I was 18 months old, that was when my parents got divorced. I rarely saw my mother after that, I know almost nothing about her besides how she looks. She moved to Australia when I was 9. We haven't seen each other since then. My father visited me, but lately I've stopped caring about him because of his unrealistically high expectations for me in school. I hate school because of how much pressure he puts on me to do well.

I like learning about all kinds of things especially languages (I speak French, Esperanto and Afrikaans at a basic conversational level, I'm currently focusing on improving them. My dad seems to think that learning languages is a waste of time, actually he thinks everything besides school is a waste of time.) I spend a lot of time reading books and stuff I find on the internet. I like rap music that talks about problems, such as Eminem, Tupac and Wu Tang Clan I also like metal, especially Rammstein.

I would really like to one day move to somewhere in western Europe, because I really, really hate living in South Africa.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Oh dear. Soul flame incoming. Prepare yourself.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

My introduction

Wow.... a person from South Africa! That's where I'm from too. Smile

Currently in London though (just visiting)... it's awesome here in comparison. Trains, buses, bike lanes, ordering pretty much anything online... friendly people too, people from all over the world in one place... I like it.

So anyways, back in South Africa, I live in Worcester, but am planning to move to Cape Town in the near future. What part of the country are you in? Some parts are better than others...

I had a friend who's parents lived in South Africa. They had clocks in their house with both the time here and in Cape Town. He goes there every year to visit his grandparents. He moved to Minnesota :/

My introduction

My friend said he liked Scotland better than London because he thought the Brits were dicks.

I find it odd that there are two "Island" nations inside of South African territory...and that South Africa has 3 capitals for each branch of government. And from what I've understood, it's the whitest African nation. And that there are some nice looking South African models...but that's a wholly irrelevant topic to say the least. I really need to visit South Africa.

Yes but I don't see what that has to do with anything, I have black friends, I have nothing against people who aren't white.

I live in Benoni, which is just outside Johannesburg.

I also play the Piano, I forgot to mention that. Smile

South Africa is a great tourist destination, when I want to speak French to someone I hang out by the amusement park and I can generally find a few people.

South Africa IS the whitest African nation but whites are still the minority.

I hope I've answered all your questions. Biggrin

RE: My introduction

All the South Africans I have ever met have been white. I don't really know very much about the current situation for white South Africans but I still feel sorry for them. It seems like a tough situation. The novel Disgrace made a huge impression on me. Maybe I'm too pessimistic but I doubt that a white minority will be treated fairly in a black majority democracy, especially with the history of apartheid. I know a white guy who 'owns' property in another African country and a band of radical Muslims just occupied his house and that was it. He lost his property with no compensation. That wasn't in South Africa but, like that novel, the story made an impression on me.

Nice. Still loads more French people here though, lol.

Yeah, I've heard of some crazy stuff like that happening. Like people's homes getting occupied and there you go, it's just not theirs anymore. And farmers getting murdered just for being white, and not a whole lot being done about the killers. There are some loonies in the government too, which is sometimes entertaining, but they really really shouldn't be in any position of power. *cough* Zuma and Malema... why people follow those two is beyond me. I think the main problem is so many people are just horribly gullible and un-informed.

RE: My introduction

German?

I try to take rock songs and turn them into piano pieces. I've done a few My Chemical Romance songs and I'm currently trying to compose a choral arrangment for Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas for Soprano, Alto and Bass, with piano accompaniment for the awesome guitar riffs.

Ever hear of David Garrett? He turns rock songs into orchestral/violin pieces(he plays the violin and I'd say he's pretty damn good at it).

I think it's called "Symphonic Rock" as a genre.

There's a band called Apocolyptica that does that too and they are the reason why I want to learn violin. An then there's Trans Siberian Ochestra.

I heard some Apocolyptica songs on Pandora. That's where I learned about them. They're pretty good too.
